Useful Information About Conferences

June 30, 2008 By: admin Category: Workplace Communication Comments Off

Conferences are basically meetings between a specified group of organizers or members of an organization with the express purpose of achieving some goal. To confer means to meet in order to share or compare views. Similarly conferences are meetings to discuss or consult. In broad terms, a conference can be defined as a meeting of individuals or representatives of various bodies for the purpose of discussing and/or acting on topics of common interest. There are many types of conferences. For example, in academic conferences, researcher present and discuss their papers or research work. In medical conferences, doctors discuss their work or new diseases and in political conferences, leaders discuss political or pressure issues.

Any large meeting is usually called a conference, while meetings are frequently called workshops. Conferences can be divided into single track or multiple track meetings. A single track conference has one session, while a multiple track conference has several parallel sessions with different speakers in separate rooms. Depending on the theme of the conference, many social or entertainment activities may also be offered. If it is a large conference, academic publishing houses may set up booths offering book sales. At larger conferences for businesses or at political meetings, interest groups may also be set up.

Conferences are usually held in convention centers or hotels. But with new technology using audio visual equipment and satellite technology conferences can be done without actually meeting in person. A conference call is a telephonic conversation where the calling party meet in unison through conferencing lines.

A Delicious Companion to Good Health: The Olive Oil Story

June 30, 2008 By: admin Category: Tips For Cooking Comments Off

The patient should be made to understand that he or she must take charge of his own life. Dont take your body to the doctor as if he were a repair shop. — Quentin Regestein

Highly favored as a cooking oil, or for use in a variety of classic dressings, olive oil is being touted in some quarters as a delicious companion to good health. Research on the health benefits of olive oil is impressive, so is the affects of the Mediterranean diet.

Recent Findings

Olive Oil as a Cholesterol Reducer

Compared to American cuisine, especially the snack and fast foods prevalent in the US, the Mediterranean Diet has intrigued the medical world. The European Journal of Clinical Nutrition has published findings that indicate the introduction of olive oil into our regular diet has demonstrated a reduction in LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol). This is significant because once LDL cholesterol has oxidized it often results in artery rigidity and accompanying heart disease.

Olive Oil in Cancer Prevention

In a comparison study at the University Hospital Germans Trias Pujol in Barcelona there seems to be an indication that the health benefits of olive oil may also be useful in the prevention or slowing of cancer cells. In the study, lab rats were introduced to a carcinogen that resulted in cancerous tumors. The study provides evidence that a diet similar to the Mediterranean diet, rich in olive oil prevents colonic carcinogenesis reducing precancerous tissue which resulted in fewer tumors when compared to a controlled sample of rats ingesting foods containing other types of cooking oils.

Researchers at Oxford University in England have seen indications that olive oil may actually be as good for our digestive system as fresh fruit and vegetables in preventing or reducing the incidence of colon cancer. While red meat seems to be linked to the development of colon cancer, fish and olive oil seemed to reduce the incidence of colon cancer. The reasons behind this phenomena are still being considered, but it is believed that the olive oil may help regulate the bile acid in the stomach while increasing useful enzymes within the stomach that contribute to optimal colon health.

Olive Oil and Heart Health

The American Heart Association has also noted that consumption of olive oil has clear health benefits.

Olive Oil and Lower Blood Pressure

By substituting virgin olive oil for other fats within your diet, the Archives of Internal Medicine indicates a substantial reduction in drug dosage requirements for the management of high blood pressure. Initial findings indicate dosage reductions could be as high as 50%.

Additional Findings

By lowering the level of LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) there is an increase of the HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol). The antioxidant effects of olive oil have also been widely reported and are effective in reducing free radicals within the body that may prove to be a causal agent in pre cancerous and cancerous growth.

Additional health benefits of olive oil may be found in a Mediterranean diet which explores the varied uses of olive oil in both food preparation as well as additional balanced meal choices. Combined, olive oil and appropriate food choice seem to enhance the overall health of those subscribing to the Mediterranean diet.

Final Word

While studies remain ongoing, it is encouraging to note that something that has long been noted for good taste may also be a link to positive health benefits and longevity of life. An adaptation of the Mediterranean diet may be a healthy, yet palatable change well worth considering.

Humanistic Psychology

June 30, 2008 By: admin Category: School Psychology Comments Off

Humanistic psychology is a school of psychology that came to be established somewhere in the 1950s. This was found in reaction to both behaviorism and psychoanalysis. Humanistic psychology is concerned with the human dimension of psychology and the human context for the growth of psychological theory.

James Bugental in 1960 further shortened this theory by stating five hypothesis of humanistic psychology. This mainly states that human beings cannot be compared or reduced to a machine and that every human being has within him a distinctively human context. It also states that human consciousness comprises of an awareness of oneself in relations other people and that human beings have choices and responsibilities. Lastly, it suggests that human beings are intentional and seek meaning, value, and creativity.

Apart from James Bugental, Abraham Maslow was also a profound advocator of humanistic psychology. He is also known as the father of the humanistic psychology movement. He is responsible for enlightening everyone by asserting that people should study the lifestyles of healthy people so that they will be able to pass judgments on their own lifestyles. Similarly, he also stated that studying the lifestyles of “not so healthy people” would automatically help people realize their shortcomings and adopt effective strategies.

There have been a number of psychologists, including Carl Rogers and Clark Moustakas, who were interested in establishing a professional association. This association would be concerned with and exclusively dedicated to the psychology that focuses exclusively on human issues, such as the self, self-actualization, well-being, hope, love, ingenuity, nature, being, becoming, and individualism. In simple words, it relates to all aspects of human behavior.

However, the theories on humanistic psychology have been subjected to a great deal of criticism. This is because human behavior is purely subjective and cannot be categorized into fixed classes. However, in spite of these limitations, the concept of humanistic psychology has gained immense popularity and has proved to be extremely beneficial.

Comfort Comes From Unexpected Places

June 30, 2008 By: admin Category: Inspirational Quote Comments Off

Autumn of 89 began like any other. Summer was quickly coming to a close as winter crept in. Like most years, the family was anxiously anticipating sharing the holidays together.

Although each year became a bit more difficult due to the miles that kept us physically apart, in our hearts we remained close. What I have always cherished most about time with my family is the laughter and the enjoyment of simple things.

Amazingly, even that which we appreciate we often take for granted. Without realizing it, I took for granted that my mother and father, in their early sixties in 89, would be around for years to come. Years that in a moment seemed to be ripped from my reality.

It was late on a Monday night in September of that year when I got the dreaded call. If you want to see your father alive, you must come quickly. Those words rang in my head as I carelessly tossed cloths into a bag. My reasoning was such that a tattered grocery bag would suffice as my luggage.

My reasoning was also such that rather than immediately get on the road, I felt compelled to bake my father his favorite cookies. Although I had been told he was in a coma as a result of a massive cardiac arrest, I was convinced my cookies would be the magic formula to bring him around.

As I drove late into the night, memories of long ago danced in my head. Memories of times shared with my father who, although a pillar in my life, now lay lifeless in a hospital bed. Glancing frequently at the plate of cookies that were placed carefully on the seat behind me, I tearfully wondered if I would ever see my father alive again.

The shock of seeing my father hooked up to countless monitors and machines was almost beyond belief. And yet, what my sisters and I quickly realized was the devastation my mother was experiencing. The three of us wondered if our parents would have the opportunity to celebrate their 40th anniversary together.

With no obvious change over the next few days, my sisters, mother and I found comfort in each others arms. Strangely, we also found comfort by bringing each other cuddly stuffed animals. Within days, my mothers collection of teddy bears grew and grew.

It was as if each bear held a special meaning to her and brought what little comfort could be experienced as she diligently watched her husband lay in his own world of a coma.

After weeks of praying for the near impossible, my father slowly began to regain consciousness. Knowing a miracle had taken place, for the next few months we were thrilled at each baby step my father took in his recovery.

Having to undergo massive heart surgery to repair some of the damage, my father kept a few close companions near his bedside as he recouped from his wounds. The very teddy bears my mother found comfort in while my father was on his vacation were the bears he now found comfort in.

As I prepare for the holiday season this year, I wonder how much of an impact my fathers heart attack and all the experiences that went with it had on my decision to fulfill a lifelong dream.

For years, I had a secret desire to open a teddy bear store so I could share the feelings teddy bears had given me when I went through a very painful divorce. A feeling of comfort that somehow only the right bear can bring. The same type of comfort teddy bears brought to my mother, my father, my sisters and me in the autumn of 89. The same type of comfort I now have the opportunity to share with others on a daily basis.

With my fathers experience now years behind, I am once again anticipating sharing a holiday season with my mother and father who are soon going to be celebrating 57 years of marriage. Often my folks come to visit me during the holidays, as it is a very busy time of year. What with all the gift wrapping for the many people who come from all over the country to experience the unique teddy bear store that was once only a dream.

I have learned life is about having the courage to live our dreams. It is in the willingness to do what we are destined to do we have the opportunity to bring comfort, joy, laughter and love to the lives of others.

If the only lesson I learned during the autumn of 89 is how precious life is, I will forever be grateful. It is because of that lesson I am gifted with the opportunity to often help select just the right teddy bear for someone who is in need of comfort. Other times, it is to select a bear that is meant to bring joy, or express love, or gratitude, or just because. because teddy bears make the world a little better one bear at a time.

Creative Ways To Make More Money

June 30, 2008 By: admin Category: Creativity Workshops Comments Off

There are many ways you can use creativity to make money. For example- the most obvious way is to use your creative skills to make something, like a piece of pottery or a painting, and sell it. Then you can also use creativity to think of new and unusual ideas for increasing the sales, money, and customers. On the other hand you can use creativity to improve upon the ideas and innovations.

Thinking about innovative ways gave a new word called “lateral thinking” (most sources attribute it to Edward De Bono). Lateral thinking is using creative, right-brained thought to come up with different solutions and ideas. Lateral thinking avoids the usual thinking process and finds way to think out of box ideas.

The following are some ways to use your creativity to make money -

(1) Pack your special brand of creativity into a product or service so that

(2) It makes the targeted niche of people love them because you use your passion and knowledge to make their lives a lot easier and less frustrated by

(3) Sell something that solves a problem of your customers. Unless you make their life happy they will not part with money.

Many businesses are successful because someone took an approach to make a difference in the lives of their customers. Look at a pack of anti acne creams. They all sell because they remove acne. That is a need. Creativity is to change the formulation and give more benefits.

One can add moisturizer to acne cream. One can use anti aging agents to the acne cream. One can prepare different formulations for different skins. One can make the cream more absorbent. There are many ways in which the cream can be changed and benefits added to the cream so that the consumers feel great about it.

Book Review - Compassionate Caregiving By Lois D. Knutson

June 30, 2008 By: admin Category: Eldercare Services Comments Off

Hands-on Guidebook for Caregiving

Lois D. Knutson offers workable solutions, tips, encouragement, and invaluable information important to family caregivers in her book “Compassionate Care giving”. Knutson is sensitive to the spiritual nature and call of care giving and includes a scripture passage and prayer within each chapter specifically related to the material covered. The suggested affirmations, one for each day of the month were especially valuable for spiritual encouragement and for keeping a perspective on personal self worth.

Lois includes guidelines for nurture, spiritual and psychological, as well has suggestions for practical issues like equipment needed in the home, celebrating holidays, evaluating nursing homes, assisted-living, and other caregiving facilities.

I found insight into caregiving as a spiritual calling, a ministry. I personally found the chapters on how to deal with the death of a loved one important, comforting, and compassionate.

The book provides a comprehensive appendix which is filled with forms, a spiritual journey exercise, suggested Bible passages for caregivers, and a list of helpful web sites. The end notes listed by chapter give evidence of well documented, thorough, research. Lois Knutson is herself a caregiver. She has served as a hospital chaplain, is trained in geriatric pastoral care, and is a national speaker on older adult ministry.

“Compassionate Care giving” is an significant, valuable, and timely. This is an important resource tool for pastors, lay counselors, hospital chaplains, and seminary students. The book is written specifically for the family caregiver. This is a book to be read, read again, and passed along to other family members. Practical and Helpful.

RUNNING MEANINGFUL MEETINGS

As you know, there is nothing more boring than sitting through a meeting that is pointless or unfocused. Its a common time waster. Meetings are very costly in terms of time and productivity. So if youre called upon to run a meeting, the first question you should ask yourself is, Is this meeting really necessary or can I accomplish what needs to be done in a more efficient manner? If you have a better alternative, use it. Today, with e-mail, faxes, conference calls, teleconferencing and computer networks, you have numerous options. But if youve decided that an in-person meeting is the best choice, then plan ahead carefully.

Before your meeting, you need to set goals. What is it that needs to be decided? What is the best possible outcome from this gathering? Write down your goals so you have them on hand. Do you need one meeting or a series of meetings to accomplish your intentions? What preparation do participants need to execute beforehand? Do you need to appoint a pre-meeting task force or obtain certain documents or have participants e-mail you agenda ideas or problems to be solved? Historically, how productive have meetings with this group been? What style meeting works best with this group?

Meetings are meant to be an exchange of ideas and/or information. There are generally five purposes for meetings: to inform, to train, to inspire, to solve problems or to resolve conflicts. What is the purpose of your meeting? Is it realistic to handle multi-purposes at this one meeting?

Secondly, take the time to analyze your participants. Consider all the people who should attend this meeting and why. More participants often make for longer meetings, so keep your list to a minimum. But also beware of the consequences of overlooking people who ought to be there. Review a staff list to make sure you have invited all the key people. If they are strangers, follow the Audience Analysis guidelines to help you to prepare. If the participants are people you know, then think about how they interact. Is there a loudmouth in the group who disrupts meetings with long monologues? If so, you are in charge of intervening on the groups behalf. Is it a quiet group? Then, design activities to get people interacting and working together. Is this a group that works well together or are there festering conflicts that need to be diffused? Think about your participants in detail: their moods, their work habits, their abilities, their gripes, their pressures, their resources, their diversity, etc. Then plan a format that will guarantee that this group can meet its goals. Also, think carefully about the where and when of the meeting. Is the location convenient for everyone? Is the room comfortable and private? Is the room depressing or attractive? Would it be helpful for the meeting to be out of the office? Do you have the right equipment? Hows the lighting? What time of day is best for the group? Would snacks be an asset?

Thirdly, you need to write up an agenda and distribute it to the participants beforehand and ask for additional suggestions. As you are in charge, you must decide what agenda items fit your time frame. Think about the order of agenda topics. You may want to place the easier agenda items first so the group experiences success early on. If you have a lot of agenda items to cover, you may want to note a time allotment next to each item. A critical agenda item is assignments. At the end of a quality meeting, the chairperson needs to list out the results and assignments for each participant. If you cant resolve an issue at the meeting, assign a study group to outline the issues or poll the participants. Clearly delineate what decisions have been made and what actions will be taken and by whom. Discuss with the group any loose ends and either allocate another time or designate a person to manage them. Restate conclusions to insure agreement and end on time. People respect a leader who is considerate of their time pressures and actively facilitates the agenda so that there are visible results. Distribute a written meeting summary to the group within 48 hours and follow up with the study groups prior to the next meeting to make sure they are prepared with the right information. Armed with these tools, you can take advantage of growth opportunities and increase your value to your organization.

A Free Easy to Make Mold You Can Make

June 30, 2008 By: admin Category: Hobby Crafts Comments Off

This is a fast, easy way to make some free molds for concrete, hypertufa, plaster, etc.

First decide what you want to copy. It must be something that can be painted with Acetone without melting. An example would be a brick or rock.

Now get some of that blue or pink rigid foam insulation. You should try to get the 2 inch thick stuff if you want your mold to last. To begin just get whatever you can. Sometimes you can pick up a couple of scraps at construction sites for free.

Clean your rock and be sure it is dry. This is important; water and acetone do not mix!

Put your insulation on the table, and next to it put your rock with the side you want to copy facing up. Paint the rock with Acetone and VERY quickly place it on the foam. When it has sunk in an inch or two pull it out.

Wait a while for the foam to harden up, and there is your mold!!

Paint on some mold release (also known as 10w engine oil). Try not to have any puddles; they will cause holes in the concrete.

You may have to play with this a bit to get the feel of painting and sinking your rock, but it works!!

Without My Wings!

June 30, 2008 By: admin Category: Inspirational Quote Comments Off

This Brittney Spears song inspires this chapter every time you see my thoughts on this great song, I believe you are going to love it. When an angel loses his or her wings, do they really fall to earth? Can they make the transition to life like the one they have never seen before? Will the world allow them to enter it or will they be swallowed completely whole?

Some believe that their mate is an angel, I think they really feel that they are from heaven and are waiting in that special moment where they needed to be at that moment in time, or the time would have just moved on past and they would have never knew what love was like.

Like the movie city of Angels, you cut yourself just to see if you are alive. When angels cross over do they remember the glory of God or is all that is on their mind is the one they have fallen in love with. I mean every time they fall they feel so lonely, thats when I feel a presence at my side that it is almost perfect, I guess I need you baby.

Without my wings I fall, I am so lost, I guess I need you baby, notice me, take my hand, flap my wings, strangers past my way. I love the strong, every time I see you in my dreams, is it make believe, or do I need love you baby, ever time I fly, I fall so far, I try to spread my broken wings, I fall so far baby, at night I pry, that you are with me!

That look on your face, you are in my dreams, you are near to me, I guess I need you baby. Notice me take my hand, a strangers plans, I love you stronger. Every time I see you in my dreams, it feels as though you hold me, I have faith. If I need to spread my broken wings, then I will know that you are going to be there to catch me.

At night I pry that you will be there in my dreams, notice me I can feel you baby. Here is the music, take my hand, what to believe, our love is strong I cannot go on without you.
Every time I fly, I see you in my dreams you look at me, I guess I needed you baby, wipe my tears with your broken wings.

I say to God you are the one for me, please Lord let them come to me, the life I live was meant to be with that angel you sent to me! How can I deviate from the plan? You let me fall for that angel that you brought down to me.

Here I cry and is it make me believe, now baby. I see clearly, what you needed happened now you seemed to move so difficulty. My love to thee, I give my heart to thee, my wings caused you pain I guess I need you baby, at night pry someday your face will fade away, I mean is it possible for angel to love a man, she could be my girl.

This is not a dream you are next to me, I flap my wings, a strangers plans, I guess I need you baby, in my dreams, I need you baby, Am I awake? Can you see, I see clearly, what have I have done?

Every time I try to fly my wings bleed for you, Lord please have mercy for I am falling for an angel, but look at me , can you hear me baby, at night I pry your face will fade away, I fill so small. In my dreams, you are haunting mean, baby guess I need you now, because we live in a city of angels,

In addition, when the time is right baby, God will give us our angel. That is when you ask, why me? I need you baby and if time could ever stand still, I would never take my eyes off of you, I guess I Need you baby, take my broken wings father, as I fall to my fate, heaven knows I cannot wait, I need you baby, we live in a city of angels cant you see? That my blessed angel lives for me, I guess I love you baby!

Elder Care Planning Guide

June 30, 2008 By: admin Category: Eldercare Services Comments Off

Q. When do you need a care facility?

A. A residential care facility should be taken into account when at least one of the following circumstances happens:

- Your elderly relative requires and demands twenty four hour of continuous care and attention.

- Your elderly relative can not anymore cope up with the activities of day-to-day living such as eating, bathing, using the toilet, changing etc.

- Your elderly relative is more likely to have either physical or verbal violent out burst and is a threat to himself and to others.

- Your elderly relative has wandered off from the safety of home.

- The caregivers physical condition and welfare is harmfully affected.

Q. What out of home choices for the elderly are available?

A. A variety of choices are available, and it is an important decision, so choose wisely.

1. Residential care facility.

For the elderly that is no longer able to live alone however does not require skilled nursing attention and care. Assistance is given in grooming, bathing and other daily activity as well as care and supervision for temporary illness.

2. Assisted living facility.

Granting independence to the elderly who are moderately healthy and active. An impaired spouse and a healthy spouse may live together in an assisted living facility, where most include apartment style of living with separate kitchens, twenty for hour security, social and recreational programs.

3. Skilled nursing facility.

Also known as nursing homes, wherein patients are given continuous nursing services and assistance from a licensed vocational or registered nurse. Skilled nursing facility provides extensive and broad services and help, such as medication, injections and constant monitoring of blood pressure as well as support for patients with ventilators.
