When to Use High Heat on Your Barbeque

September 30, 2008 By: admin Category: Tips For Cooking Comments Off

While some people really seem to have a knack for barbequing always grilling up a perfect meal for the rest of us, it is something that must be learned, not something that just comes naturally. Believe it or not, there is technique involved. Its not just a matter of following your cooking instincts.

One of the main secrets of knowing exactly how to make a beautiful, tasty meal every time is knowing how and when to use high heat or very hot coals.

Though you may have heard the term \”seal in the juices\” when it came to barbequing, you may even have tried some techniques every now and then, but unless youre doing it properly, you wont be getting it right. For the best results, many barbeque chefs cook vegetables and medium-rare steaks by first using a high heat in order to sear the outside of the food and seal both the juices and the flavors inside.

Though this technique is good for foods that you dont want to cook thoroughly, it shouldnt be overused. If youre cooking a meat such as hamburgers or pork ribs, they must be cooked all the way through in order to avoid bacterial contamination. Therefore, searing them to seal in the juices doesnt do anything but give you dry, or charred food.

This can be explained by understanding the way that meat cooks on a barbeque. As it is heated, the cells and the fibers of the meat will tighten, squeezing out much of the juices. Therefore, if youre only cooking a meat partially, searing it will help to seal in the juices by quickly cooking the outer layers of the food. However, if you should leave the food on this high heat, the inner layers will cook too quickly, vaporizing all of your precious and tasty juices. Try the technique a few times until you get it right. Pay attention to what youre doing, so that when you do accomplish the right technique, you know how to repeat it.

When you are using high heat, the rule of thumb is to cook on each side for a maximum of five minutes (a total of ten minutes). After ten minutes, anything that youre cooking should be moved aside to a medium heat so that it can finish cooking at that lower temperature.

There are many ways to recognize how hot your fire really is, to make sure that its always perfect for any kind of food that youre cooking on your barbeque. One of the most common tests is simply to hold your hand a couple of inches away from the grill. If youre only able to keep it there for about a second, your grill is at a high heat (that is, over 600F). If youre able to hold your hand there fore a few seconds, its at a medium heat (around 400F). At a lower heat, youll be able to hold your hand there for over five seconds.

Remember, when it comes to high heat, practice makes perfect, and the perfect is well worth the practice!

The Most Beautiful Shape: Letting Your Creative Work Find Its Most Natural Form

September 30, 2008 By: admin Category: Creativity Workshops Comments Off

Creative and artistic projects can begin from any number of sources, ideas and sparks of inspiration.

A snippet of overheard witty conversation at party, the atmosphere of an old jazz record, a collision of colours in nature, a scent that recalls the summers of your childhood, and a million others…

The common factor though, is they all begin SOMEWHERE. However small the idea, its our starting point, the tiny jetty we set off from in our eager hopeful boats.

Pretty soon after we set sail though, what happens if we begin to get a little sea sick? If we get a little anxious about the way this new creative project is going, realising already its not quite turning out as we expected, what happens then?

Weve barely lost site of the shoreline, but the winds changed direction, the sails are billowing and our vessels heading off determinedly in a completely new direction… This wasnt the trip we planned!

For example, what if the most rewarding parts of your ambitious biting political satirical novel are actually in the intimate personal dynamics between three minor characters?

Maybe your exhibition watercolours of natural coastal landscapes is dominated by the beauty and impact of the solitary painting that features a derelict lighthouse?

What if, what started out as a dance record based on heavily processed electronic rhythms, only truly makes your spine tingle within the spaces of its slower ambient interludes?

Do We Haul Back The Rudder? Jump Overboard? Or Something Else?

When this happens, when we feel the heart of the creative project drifting away from what we originally expected it to be, we have a number of options.

Number one, we could panic, make every effort to haul the project back to where we want it to be, force it along a straight and narrow path, however much it seems to be resisting that path.

Or, number two, we could give up, jump ship and abandon it completely, exasperated at its refusal to conform to our perfectly formed expectations, exclaiming its got to be our way or no way at all.

Or, we could take the third option. Let go of the rudder, lay back, and let the wind take us. Allow the art to breathe, to have its own way, to find its own natural form and definition.

Which of the three sounds most like what youd do? Which option would be most conducive to getting the most interesting and rewarding results from the creative project?

Which would be the most pleasing to your sense of natural creativity?

The Courage and The Faith

Every piece of creative work we begin has, to some extent, to find its own life, its own shape, and its own meaning. To loosen our hold, to stand back and let this happen, often takes great courage and faith. The courage to relinquish control and step into the unknown. And the faith that we have the patience, creative ability and resources to see the project through to its natural conclusion.

Some of the most famous inventions and artworks in history came as a result of their creator trying to create one thing and discovering something completely different as a happy accident.

Yet still we often have such fixed ideas of what our creative work SHOULD be that we lose the ability to let it fulfil its own potential, and take its own beautiful natural shape, whatever that may be.

Maybe the most beautiful shapes arent always the ones we set out to discover, but rather the ones that we allow to discover us…

How does this idea apply to YOUR creative life? How could you benefit from letting your creative projects find their own beautiful shape, their own rhythm and evolve into the most amazing and rewarding possible creative work for you?

Office Chairs, Choose Your Options Wisely

September 30, 2008 By: admin Category: Workplace Communication Comments Off

So many different features, styles and colors are available that it can be confusing to make sure to order the correct options for your office chair. Sitting in your office chair for considerable lengths of time is standard with computers playing such an important role in the 21st century. Practicing proper ergonomics while making sure to purchase the right size of chair are key factors for a healthy body and spine when spending lengthy hours of time seated.

The standard options available on most task office chairs and stools are things like seat height adjustment levers, a tilt mechanism, tilt locking pins and lumbar support with adjustments on each. Having proper lumbar support and the adjsutability of the tilt mechanism are probably the most important features in order to stay comfortable in the long term. The lower back is the area facing the most stress when sitting for long periods of time and the extra lumbar support can really be felt. Lumbar support can also be optioned with an adjustment scale to help place the support where needed for the users body type even with different users.

The desired position when seated in your office chair is in a slightly reclined position, so a tilt mechanism is needed for proper positioning. This also works to prevent back problems in the long term. Some tilt mechanisms also come with locking positions to help the user to properly recline into the desired position for the task at hand.

One feature that is helpful for users but is found mostly in more expensive models, is an option referred to as synchro-knee tilt. This allows the users feet to stay on the floor while straight backed and even when in a reclining position. Ergonomics also call for your feet to stay on the floor at all times to keep the spine in the correct position. The synchro-knee tilt mechanism simply reclines the feet at a slower ratio than it does the back of the seat. The ratio is approximately 2 degrees for recline in each position for the back support and 1 degree for recline in each position for the seat.

A headrest can be helpful to the taller user or the user who spends more time reclining than the average worker. When choosing a high backed model versus a mid or low backed model, it seems to be more of a taste issue than ergonomic needs. Most executive chairs feature a high back while the task chairs are standard in a mid back form. When choosing the features for a chair where you intend to spend a great deal of your day, keep in mind your body type and individual tasks that need to be performed daily to find the perfect office chair for you.

The Day I First Believed

September 30, 2008 By: admin Category: Inspirational Quote Comments Off

I was eight years old, over four decades ago and I remember this event as though it was yesterday. It was a beautiful but cold and blistering winter day in the city of Detroit. Snow was falling moderately, but the wind was ferocious. My siblings and I were engage in some play activity when I was suddenly summoned by my mother and told to go to the store to purchase a loaf of bread and a few other items. Begrudgingly, I took the five dollar bill, dressed in my insulated snow suit and left for the store which was about six blocks away.

On the way, something terrible occurred; the five dollar bill blew out of my hand. I ran to try and catch it but the blowing snow blinded me and I lost track of it. I was panic stricken. After all, money did not come easy in our family. My father was deceased and my mother was keeping us together as best she could by herself. Even at the tender age of eight, I understood what losing five dollars meant and it hurt me to have to tell my mother that I had let the money escape from me.

But the biggest hurt came when I did tell her. She did not believe I was telling her the truth. I was devastated. I did not understand why she thought I was lying. I was deeply wounded and it became important for me to try and prove my innocence because my mothers trust meant everything to me. The problem was, I did not know how.

That night, as always, I got on my knees to say my prayers. This prayer was different. Usually, it was the typical now I lay me down to sleep and asking God to bless every relative and friend I could think of. But on this night, I cried as I asked God to make my mother believe me. I told God that the preacher said He knew everything and could do anything and since He knew I was telling the truth, He just had to somehow make my mother know it too.

Miracle on Maplewood St.

The next day, the Detroit News carried headlines and an article about the plight of a paperboy who had customers money blow away from him after he had made collections in the blowing and drifting snow. After reading this, my mother came to me and apologized for not believing me. She stated that if it could happen to the paperboy it could happen to me. My joy knew no bounds. My mother believed me! God had worked a miracle. He really did know everything and could do anything.

It was at this moment that my faith journey began. No longer was it what the preacher said, it was what Saundra knew.

Senior Living - Easing The Transition

September 30, 2008 By: admin Category: Eldercare Services Comments Off

Many senior citizens freely admit that they fear growing older more than they fear death. The prospect of becoming increasingly frail and dependent in a society which worships strength and self-reliance, and of losing family and lifetime friends can understandably make the specter of old age a frightening one.

Does senior living have to be a time of physical failing and emotional loss? Of course aging brings physical deterioration, and time brings the loss of loved ones, but senior living can still bring growth and new awareness. Those who are emotionally, financially, and socially ready to take on the challenges of aging are the ones for whom senior living can actually bring happiness.

Involving YOur Family

Many persons, especially parents, find that their own families are in denial about the fact that they are growing older. This denial is counterproductive, and if you are in that situation, you have the right to confront your loved ones with the fact that you need to make plans for your later years. They may resist you at first, so try to make as many preparations as you can with the assistance of your local AARP chapter or community services for the aging. Your family will eventually come around.

When they do, youll be glad for the companionship and support they can add during your senior living experience. By keeping your lines of communication with them open, youll avoid misunderstandings about such critical issues as your wishes on heroic measures to sustain your life, and the final disposition of your assets. Youll experience much more peace knowing that these topics have been discussed and understood, and that your wishes concerning them will be honored.

There are many aspects of senior living which will require input from your family; where you will live; who will manage you finances should you become unable to; and who will be responsible for seeing that you get proper medical care an transportation if you need it. If you are going to live with on child, clarify what you expect of the other children so that there is no resentment from the child with whom you live, who may feel overwhelmed.

The quality of your senior living will depend to a very great degree on the communicating you do with your family ahead of time. Making sure in advance that your housing, finances, medical, and social needs will be met will not only relieve you of a tremendous burden; it will bring you and your family closer together so that your years of senior living will be as carefree and rewarding for both you and you family as you can possibly hope.

An honest, loving conversation with your family about your fears on growing older will be the first step to providing you with the great senior living you deserve!

Universal Laws And The Handbook For the New Paradigm

September 30, 2008 By: admin Category: Inspirational Quote Comments Off

In reading the \”Handbook for a New Paradigm\” telepathically channeled by George Green and which anyone can download for free at:

http://www.nomorehoaxes.com/shop/download/handbook.pdf

I was struck by the simplicity and power of four Universal Laws that govern our reality that many of us have forgotten. They are well explicated in the Handbook and I refer you to them for a more lengthy discussion.

I will however mention one that I feel would make a great difference to the situation on this planet.

It is called the the Law of Allowance

Basically it states that ones should let others be, pure and simple.

In other words:

Stop trying to control others.

Stop judging others.

Stop complaining about others.

Accept the decisions that others make for themselves.

Appreciate the fact that \”they\” are responsible and accountable to themselves for their own thoughts and actions.

The same holds for you or yourself.

Let go of any internal compulsive behaviors or thoughts.

Stop judging yourself.

Stop beating yourself up.

Accept that everything that happens to you is of your own making. Yes I know that one may be hard to swallow but if you look at it closely I think you will see that it is the truth. This same point is made in another one of my articles entitled:

\”The Law of Attraction: From the Handbook for a New Paradigm\”

So how will living in respect of this Law of Allowance change you or the world around you?

Well for you I think you will find yourself feeling a great sense of inner peace, joy, the ability to relax, carefree, a great measure of self esteem and especially a great sense of personal empowerment.

The world itself will also change dramatically because all of the competition, all of the conflict, all of the wars etc that are going on here are in part related to the fact that we are ignoring this important Law.

In the Handbook the point is made that all of this can be done easily and simply with a simple \”prayer\” or \”mantra\” which is not one of supplication but a request for true help. By true help I mean \”help\” that is in the nature of \”assisting one\’s empowerment\” and not one of \”expecting to be rescued\”.

The statement is as follows\”

\”I am a human becoming, help me to become\”

For others it is adapted to:

\”They are humans becoming, help them to become\”

For the collective is adapted to:

\”We are humans becoming, help us to become\”

I have used these statements in my own personal life now for almost 6 months and have found them to be powerfully transformative of my perspective on myself, others and the situation on this planet.

I use them whenever I feel I \”challenged\” by internal negative thoughts or feelings about myself, others or the planetary situation.

If you feel inspired I ask you to consider using them as well. After all it\’s free and it can only change your life permanently.

If after all of this you recognize the power of these statements I sincerely encourage you to read the handbook itself in its entirety. It will help fill in the background and make known to you something important information that has been kept from humanity for millennia.

Blessings!

You Are The Problem!

September 30, 2008 By: admin Category: Inspirational Quote Comments Off

You have a choice right now. It\’s about your perspective and your sense of empowerment.

You can perceive the title of this article as a shaming statement that says there is something really wrong with you, so, shame on you. Therefore, you must feel bad about yourself.

Or, you can feel empowered by this title because you know that the ability to make your life as you want it is in your hands. You are the source of all the choices that have put you in a place of discomfort, pain, or misery. You have also made the choices that brought to you joy, enlightenment, and serenity. You have the Choice to make things better for yourself by making better choices.

I received many questions this week from people who would truly like to improve their lives. One of the main themes was (my summary), \”How can I change my partner, my friend, my parents, or my world so that they will love me appropriately, do what I want, or do what is good for them?\”

The questions come out of pain and disastisfaction, and from situations that cry out for change. However, these questions all assume that the solution will be arrived at when other people change.

This is the same problem I face with couples doing marriage therapy. We almost always have to go through several sessions of the \”Blame Game\” before we can get down to business. It\’s \”he said\” and \”she said\” ad nauseum. She says he should change, and he says she should change.

But finally, we start to break through to a key question, \”If your partner doesn\’t change, what will YOU do, how will YOU think, and how will YOU take charge of yourself from here on?\”

\”And, how will you do that with justice, fairness, respect, self containment, and belief in your inner sense of direction regardless of your partner\’s attempts to change you back?\”

A fear at this point is that if you take good care of yourself then your partner may leave you. This leaving could be through silence, hostility, finding someone else, or physically leaving entirely. The good news is that this rarely happens in a severe way. Usually, your partner will try ingenious ways to trick you back into the old behaviors. And, you will fall for it many times.

If the leave taking actually happens then we have a much more serious problem going on with your relationship and simple \”self-help\” is not going to fix the problem. Professional counseling is required.

Another fear is that you don\’t know what good self-care is and that you will make a mistake, creating unnecessary problems and pain.

If this is true for you, then educate yourself about it. And then, trust your sense for what is respectful treatment of others and treat yourself the same way. It\’s really not so complicated.

(And finally, feeling guilty about self-care sabotages this whole thing over and over. We think we are being \”selfish\” rather than practicing self-care. I\’m not going to try to cover this one today. It will take another whole article to address. Let me just say that this argument against self-care doesn\’t hold up too well.)

The further good news is if I can help one person in a couple start to choose this perspective of self choice and self empowerment, then the partner is usually effected in a positive light. We then move on to stage two of couples therapy where we can actually work on couple problems.

This can work for you, too. YOU are the problem. Not that other person. The sooner you accept your responsibility to treat yourself well regardless of what the other does the sooner you might have a chance of the other person actually changing.

You get to be responsible for you, not for your partner. You get to make the choices for how you will behave, not how the other behaves. You get to perceive this as a choice of empowerment… Or you can see it as just another sign of what you can\’t do. The choice is up to you…

But I want you to know something. And that is that I believe in you.

After all my experiences of helping many, many other people grow in this way, I really do believe in your ability to change yourself for the better. I believe you have the strength, the courage, and the inner conviction to make it happen for you. Because, if you are the problem, you are also the solution.

Communication Dynamics–Send a Congruent Message

September 30, 2008 By: admin Category: Workplace Communication Comments Off

Communication is the means to get things done and an indispensable medium for human relationships. It is an essential ingredient in providing the important services of organizations, as well as a basic source of personal satisfaction. Yet, although communication is the single most important factor in relationships and work success, it is the least taught and most neglected skill we use. We tend to take it for granted because too often we think that communication means, You listen and I talk. Or I am talking, you listen.

Real communication takes place when the listener understands the meaning of what the speaker says. While understanding the real meaning of the message being sent is essential to communication, it is not easy to accomplish.

Miscommunication is more prevalent than ever imagined. In fact miscommunication is so frequent it can be said to be a normal occurrence. Therefore, any work to create effective communication needs to start with that premise. Thus with that in mind, I will discuss four highly effective tools to ensure that we have understood the meaning of a message or delivered the message we intended to deliver. If any one of these tools is neglected, communication may break down.

The primary tool in communicationmaking sure the listener and the speaker have the same frame of reference.

The second important communication took is asking clarifying questions.

The third toolparaphrasing is essential. In paraphrasing, the listener rephrases what s/he has heard the speaker say. Paraphrasing serves two purposes. When the listener paraphrases, the speaker can verify that the listener has understood the message. The speaker can also verify that the intended message has been sent, because sometimes the speaker says something different from what s/he really meant.

The fourth took in effective communication is vital in developing and maintaining close personal and professional relationships. This tool is listening for the words behind the words, which translates into understanding the feelings behind what is being said. The speaker often does not overly state the feelings associated with a message. However, the feelings are being conveyed through tone of voice and body language. The listener can pick up those non-verbal messages and convey to the speaker that the intimate meaning of the message has been heard.

In summary the four essential tools in effective communication are:

1. establishing a frame of reference;

2. asking clarifying questions;

3. paraphrasing; and

4. listening for the words behind the words (understanding feelings)

It may seem that these communication tools are for the listener alone and that the listener has the major responsibility in making sure that the message is understood. In reality, communication is a 100% responsibility for both the listener and speaker. If you, as the speaker, want to be sure your message is understood, you can use the same four communication tools. Check with your listener to verify that your frame of reference is understood. Invite your listener to ask clarifying questionssuch as: When? Where? How? What? Who. Ask your listener to paraphrase back to you what has been understood. Taking responsibility for ones feelings and conveying them with the message will make your communications more meaningful and rewarding. It is also helpful to convey your feelings by making I statements. For instance, saying, I am feeling embarrassed at blowing it, takes the burden off the listener in reading non-verbal messages. Whether you are the speaker or the listener, it is your responsibility to use the communication tools conscientiously if the message is important to you.

Communication is a more complicated medium than we perceive it to be. Whether listening, reading, speaking, or writing, we have selective listening (reception) and selective speaking (transmission) processes operating at all times. As you read this article, you are selectively hearing my message and I am selectively sending it based on past experience, needs values, images and the language I use. These can all become barriers to effective communication.

As you listen, you filter information in or out based on your evaluation of what you are hearing and your determination if it has value. Do I need this? Will it give me what I want? Is it important? If the answers to these questions are Yes, you will make more effort to be sure you have understood. If the answers are No, You wont take as much time and effort. Since these questions are usually asked on an unconscious level, you may often allow past experiences to determine what you listen to in the here and now.

As a speaker, you ask, Is it important to have my message understood? What will I gain if the listener understands? The greater your need to have your message understood, the more time you will spend making sure you are heard.

The value you put on the information being conveyed also has a great deal to do with how well you communicate. As a listener, the value you place on the speakers information will determine how conscientiously you use good listening skills. If you dont agree with the basic premise or if you believe it isnt important, you may begin to evaluate the message before the speaker has finished speaking. You may then begin to daydream or mentally formulate a rebuttal.

As a speaker, the greater the value you put on the information the more time and effort you will spend conveying it. If you want your message to be understood, it is important for you to determine what is of value to the listener and deliver the message based on the listeners values.

When listeners are aware that you place importance on their values, they are usually willing to hear the significance of your message on a cognitive and affective level.

The image that you, as a listener, have of the speaker also determines the level of attention you will give him/her. If you image is one of respect, acceptance, or understanding, you will be more conscientious about making sure the message is heard. If the image is a judgmental oneDoes he know what he is talking about? He doesnt have a PhD, how can know enough to teach me?you will not spend adequate time using effective communication skills.

The same is true if you are the speaker. If your image of the listener is one of respect, understanding, or acceptance, you will spend time making sure the message has been understood. If you lack the self-image and self confidence necessary to convey your message to doctors, lawyers or some other group with whom you may feel inadequate, you will fail to use the communication skills and will not communicate in depth or adequately.

These barriers are in operation constantly on the part of both listener and speaker. In order for effective communication to take place, these barriers need to be checked out. If the listener has an unfavorable image of the speaker, the speaker needs to address that issue and resolve it. The speaker can change a perception someone has by clarifying a misunderstood action or reaction and by sending the message in a way that will meet the needs of the listener.

The language you use to convey your message is important, too. Any information can be conveyed in an infinite number of ways. As the speaker, you need to use words the listener will understand. Jargon can be a problem; therefore, avoid using professional argot, regionalisms and ethnocentrisms. You run the risk of losing the listeners interest. If you are the listener and do not understand the words being used, ask the speaker to explain.

To further create effectiveness in the communication process, you need to be aware of other processes at work within the listener. Developing a frame of reference does not mean simply gathering information so that you can drop the right word at the right time in conveying a message. A person perceives messages in a style unique to that individuals development. Does the person understand information better when it is presented in a logical, straightforward manner or when it is offered with descriptions and allegories which can be visualized? Or would a combination of both the logical and descriptive styles be more appropriate?

When we communicate, we too often make the unfortunate assumption that people are logical at all times. Such, however, is not the case. Behavioral scientists have long known that we sometimes have trouble reconciling our emotions and our logic. One does not need to be a disciple of Freud to know that our emotions interfere with our ability to reason.

There are physiological reasons to explain the frequent dichotomy between our emotional and rational capabilities. The brain of the Western World human clearly delineates or lateralizes emotions and logic and assigns these activities to opposite sides of the cerebral cortex. The emotional side is housed in the right cerebral hemisphere and the logical side is found on the left. A muscle mass known as the corpus collasum connects the two hemispheres or brains, allowing messages to travel back and forth so that the activities of both can be integrated.

The left brain allows one to be logical; it controls analytical ability, order and sequence, mathematics, problem solving, decision making, and formal language. To address the logical brain exclusively, however, is to do injustice to the whole persons perception, capabilities, and preference in understanding information. Equally as strong, though perhaps more amorphous, is the emotional brain, the right brain. The right hemisphere allows one to have imagination, draw analogies, and be intuitive, artistic, and creative. Since both the emotional and the logical side are involved in your communications, it is critical that you become aware of the role of each and learn ways to appeal to both. You can use analogies to paint a picture which will appeal to your listeners artistic, creative inclinations. In addition, you can analyze your rationale for a decision, appealing to their problem solving, decision making abilities. In this way you can assure that you are communicating with the whole persons perception capability and preference. This double-pronged approach increases the likelihood that ore of the message will be received on both cognitive and affective levels.

We have discussed the importance of conveying the meaning of your message. How do you do so? Again, it seems so simplethrough words, of course. Actually, however, words have the least impact on how your message is ultimately understood. A study done at General Electric reveals that over half the messageapproximately 58 percentis conveyed by body language; 37 percent of the message is conveyed by tone of voice; and a mere 5 percent of the message is conveyed by the words used. In order to send a congruent message, the words, tone of voice, and body language need to be sending the same message. If the words say one thing and the body language says something else, the body language is believed to be the real message.

It is often said that body language doesnt lie. This is true because body language is an unconscious process interpreted by the right brain of the receiver. Yet it is difficult to interpret body language because a slight variation can mean many different things to different people.

One can, however, make accurate inferences from many body gestures. The eyes and facial expressions convey the majority of body language messages. Flirting is a universally understood form of communication. Since the eyes and mouth are the most distinctive, it is important to study what you are doing with them when making statements. For example, when you say, No, you need to give firm, direct (not staring or glaring) eye contact and form the word no with the lips wide open and pushed forward, squeezing in the corners of the mouth as the O sound finishes. Your tone of voice needs to be firm and at a slightly lower register than normal conversation. Using a lower register does not mean speaking more quietly. It means using a slightly baritone sound. Women have the most difficulty in effecting this sound. Speaking at too high a register sometimes undermines womens credibility and may cause their statements to be considered insignificant or not worth taking seriously.

Men, on the other hand, have a tendency to speak too harshly, using sharp, hard tones even when the situation doesnt require it. Men naturally have deep voices; therefore, they seldom need to lower their voice inflection to convey a firm message. Men do need to be aware that their natural tone of voice can often intimidate. Thus, they may need to soften and relax their delivery.

These are generalizations and need to be experimented with. You will need to get feedback from others to determine how your delivery is being perceived. Get several opinions from male and female friends, colleagues, superiors, subordinates, and acquaintances. Although you will receive slightly different reactions, a pattern will emerge which will give you an idea how to specialize your presentation when interacting with specific individuals or groups.

Learning to send a congruent message which appeals to the whole persons perception capability and preference takes time and effort. For those who are concerned that it will take too much time to learn to send a congruent message, think of the time you spend redoing, re-explaining, or rehashing an issue that has gone astray, or the damage that is done when there are misunderstandings. If one aspect is not attended to, the communication process breaks down. In more complicated forms of communication it is paramount that all skills for effective communication are employed.

Ezine - Propaganda or Priceless

September 30, 2008 By: admin Category: Ezine Marketing Comments Off

The ezines that are available today bear an uncanny resemblance in intent to extended greeting cards (newsletters) of our past.

Some of the earliest newsletters date back to the early 1700s and were often political in nature. Some might even go so far as to say the earliest newsletters were filled with propaganda because the same information was not found in more reputable publications.

The 1800s saw a reduction in newsletters, but the often rebellious nature of many newsletters would not allow the genre to remain dormant. By the 1900s newsletters were once again on the rise and their importance began to be noticed and their acceptance began to grow.

Many individuals began to notice there were certain issues of interest that mainstream newspapers would not print. Perhaps their reluctance was due to a fear of retaliation or the fear of offending certain prominent members of a community (many of whom were paying for advertising).

Newsletters were important because they provided information not available elsewhere. They may not have been considered prime journalism. In fact, they were often filled with spelling and grammar errors because many who were interested in presenting an idea were not the best equipped to write about the issue.

As society raced to the end of the millennium a process known as desktop publishing began to allow more newsletters than ever to be developed. As the Internet grew in popularity the idea that originated with newsletters splintered off into a variety of tangents including forum posts, blogs and ezines.

These web-based newsletters suddenly opened the door for a variety of thoughts to be expressed to a much larger potential constituency.

While many of these ezines may have been op/ed there was also a growing number of newsletters that ventured into how-to, self-help and a variety of practical application ezines.

It seems that either the rebellious nature of the original newsletters has been tamed or perhaps the genre has simply been embraced by those who do not know of its rebellious past and simply recognize it as a tool worth using in developing connections with potential customers.

Modern ezines can allow advertising, but they can also serve as a portal to other newsletters, articles or informational pieces that may benefit the reader.

What once served as a means of pushing an agenda is now often used as a tool that genuinely seeks to assist potential customers with ideas and information that the customer considers highly valuable.

Interestingly it would seem the tables have been turned, todays ezines may be less of a propaganda tool while many newspapers are often criticized for being too political in nature.
