Art Collecting Tips

October 23, 2008 By: admin Category: Hobby Crafts Comments Off

Just because you have money doesnt mean you have to spend it. In art collecting it can actually be a disadvantage to be flush with cash, at least when youre a beginner. I say this because its harder to resist the temptation to purchase art when you have money. Even if youre a financially disciplined person, art can play on your emotions and you can find yourself spending more freely than you ever have before. Take the time to learn about the kind of art you want to collect. Unbelievable deals dont come around often, and they rarely come to beginning collectors. There will always be quality art to purchase. The best thing for you to do is take your time and learn, learn, learn about the artists or category of art you want to buy. When you feel that youre ready to take the plunge and buy a piece of art, be sure to learn as much about the artist as you can. Especially examine the artists auction records if there are any. Auction records are not definitive, but they are very helpful.

Narrow down your collecting interest as much as you possibly can. You can like all kinds of art, but it will serve your best interests to narrow down the scope of your art collecting interests as much as possible. The more you narrow down your collecting interest, the more of an expert youre likely to become in that particular area. One of the greatest joys of collecting art is learning so much about an artist that you feel almost like you know him, or studying the period of history in which the art was developed. The more this is done, the greater your appreciation of your collection will be, and your enthusiasm and knowledge will be evident when you show off your collection.

Yes, you should buy a piece of art because you love it, BUT take the financial aspect into consideration too. It has become a clich in the art advice business to tell people that the best thing for them to do is buy the art that they love. This is good advice, but somehow hidden in that statement seems to be a subtle message to not take the financial aspect of the piece into consideration. I say buy the art that you love, but also make sure youre not paying too much for it and consider your end game. I wouldnt advise asking, How much money can I make on this painting? Or How much will it appreciate? Rather, just be sure that you can recoup your investment. Tragedies can happen, and sadly what people first consider selling to raise money is their art collection.

Buying work by a deceased artist is generally less financially risky than buying art by a contemporary artist. This is because the art market for a contemporary artist has not really been tested. Most deceased artists have some kind of record of sale on the secondary market, whether it be at an auction or a gallery. This record gives you an idea of what is an appropriate price to pay for a work by a certain artist.

Just because a painting is signed T.C. Steele doesnt mean T.C. Steele actually signed it or even did the painting. What often happens is that a family member, often a wife or son or sister, signs an artist\’s paintings after he dies. If this is the case, it decreases the value of the painting. Of course, an \”artist signed\” painting could also be a forgery. Ive seen plenty of paintings that bear the signature of an artist who clearly didnt do the painting. An art appraiser can assist you in determining the authenticity of a signature or painting.

Just because a desirable artist did a painting doesnt mean that the painting is desirable. Every artist had his good days and bad days. Some had more bad than good. Certain periods of an artists work are also more desirable than other periods. Also, if an artist is known for painting landscapes, a painting that he did of a cat is probably going to be much less desirable. The medium is also important in determining desirability. Overall, oil paintings tend to rank as most desirable; however, there are artists who work in all mediums but whose watercolors or prints are more in demand than their oil paintings.

There are a lot of great deals on eBay. There are also a lot of fakes, junk, inexperienced sellers and shippers, and hucksters. Ebay can be a great place to learn about art, but it\’s not usually where the best pieces by an artist appear. This is because the best pieces are usually brokered between dealers and their clients. Occasionally, such pieces make it onto eBay, but usually through live auctions. Ebay can also be a financially risky place to buy art. The number of fakes, questionable works, and bad paintings on eBay is quite high. Unless you are an expert in a particular category of art or on a particular artist, Id avoid buying on eBay until youre sure you know what youre doing. Even then you can still make mistakes. (e.g. buying a print that was described by the seller as a painting, getting an excellent buy only to receive the item damaged because it was improperly packaged for shipping)

Most art dealers arent dishonest, but the dishonest ones have a radar for those who want to be quickly parted from their money. When buying a painting from a gallery or dealer, try to find out as much as possible about where the painting came from. Provenance enhances the value of a painting. Also, if the price seems to be out of line with similar pieces youve seen by the artist, ask the dealer how he came up with the price. He may have very sound reasons for the price difference (or you may not be familiar enough with the artist), but if he becomes defensive or combative, be suspicious.

Pricing art is an art. Its also part science and speculation. Art is not a commodity. Therefore, there are significant variations in price, even among the works of one artist. Its not unusual for an artist to have a high auction sale price of over a million dollars and a low one in the hundreds or low thousands. This happens for various reasons, usually related to size, medium, and period created. Always remember, any price can be put on a work of art, but theres no saying its worth the tag price until it sells. Also keep in mind that pricing art is not formulaic. There are dealers out there who are intentionally trying to rip people off by making them overpay for art. But most dealers use all the knowledge theyve spent considerable time acquiring; they research, they talk to other dealers, and then they come up with what they consider to be a fair market price for a piece.

Dont be an art day trader. Unless you are an art dealer, I dont advise buying paintings and quickly trading or selling them for something else. I have not met a collector yet who has not lost money doing this. And the collector usually ends up frustrating the art dealer he\’s dealing with in the process.

How To Create A Collage Journal

October 22, 2008 By: admin Category: Hobby Crafts Comments Off

Creating a collage journal is a unique and fun way to personalize and enrich your journal. Making a collage journal is something that everyone can enjoy. If you are a visual artist, photographer, writer or just someone who wants to enhance your written journal, then creating a collage journal can be quite an adventure.

CHOOSE A PAPER FOUNDATION: Find a journal with a ring binding. This will allow you to open the journal flat with two blank pages facing up. If this is your first collage, I recommend that you work create only one collage. (Note: Make sure to use a thicker strength to create a multi-dimensional collage.

LOOKING FOR SPECIFIC MATERIALS: Look for unusual words, pictures, images and other materials for your collage. Dont forget your basic office supplies such as: transparent tape, glue, scissors, stickers, glitter, paper punches as well as artistic paper, and small pieces of fabric or yarn.

CHOOSING A THEME: Take a second look at your collage pieces collection. Choose one picture that represents your theme. For example, an airplane ticket, could represent someone with a travel bug, a honeymoon plans or a future home. Remember to place your main picture at the center of your page, or wherever it fits in your overall theme.

LAYER YOUR WORK: Glue the main picture to the page. Choose from other words and images that will complement your theme. Have fun, experiment and continue your page. This is your time to shine !!! (Note: Please reread the second point for a full list of materials to layer on to your collage.)

FINAL TOUCHES: When putting the final touches on your collage, make sure to check through the page for any area that doesn\’t look quite right. Fix any areas that you notice. Finally, take a quick look at your completed creation and smile. Turn your collage over and write a sentence summarizing your collage journaling experience. (Note: Feel free to share your collage with one of your neighbors and vice versa.)

Congratulations on creating first page of your collage journal! Feel free to create more collage pages in your collage journal.

Toy Train Admiriation in Adulthood

October 22, 2008 By: admin Category: Hobby Crafts Comments Off

As a child, the majority of adolescents were introduced to toy trains. As setting up these model railroad track sets are a favorite pastime to most, there are lots of different size locomotives and brands. Playing with train sets were also a nostalgic thing to actor \”Ralphy\” , who had a circled train track around his tree on the movie \”A Christmas Story\”. Nowadays, no matter what a person\’s age, trains tend to keep a special place in the hearts of those who can\’t seem to let the hobby go.

The best thing someone could say about setting up the tracks is that you can configure them anyway you wish. That means that you could connect a bunch of switches together, curved rails and even build a switch junction for all the toy engines to park. This can be very exciting, because someone has complete control over the layout, feel , allowing the mind to roam freely how a rail scene would look. In fact, once the tracks are setup, life like houses, warehouses , and industrial buildings can be placed alongside the model layout to enrich the look.

Toy freight engine lovers also like certain brand trains. For instance, there\’s the life like Amtrak, CSX, Cheesie System, Union Pacific, DuPont, Conrail & Norfolk Southern sets. Models are sold separately, which may range anywhere from fifty dollars to three thousand. For more expensive ones, those most likely come in brass, which are made by hand and can have special insignia carved in, at the customer\’s request. Freight cars, which are placed behind the engine, cost from ten to potentially thirty dollars each, depending on the brand name of the rail boxcar. It\’s always best to mount up lots of freight cars behind the head engine, because then, you\’ll definitely know that you got your money\’s worth in buying a strong toy locomotive. For all lovers of this wonderful hobby, the sizes range from HO Scale, N Scale, Lionel and wider. For traditional admirers, \”HO Scale\” is most preferred.

In any positive hobby as a child, growing into adulthood only means the physical aspect. No matter the age, that child always seems to stay inside of us. Not only is playing with certain projects educational, but it can also be a favorite pastime to look back and always think good things about. For few, playing with toy railroad trains tend to create a desire to start a business that one day may produce enough financial fruit from to buy a real locomotive and truly bring out that little boy in a lot of grown folks!

Over The Hill Cards That Any Kid Can Make The Way They Want To

October 22, 2008 By: admin Category: Hobby Crafts Comments Off

Over the hill cards are fun to give someone on their birthday. Kids will have even more fun making these cards. They are easy to make and each child can get as creative as they want to be. They will need some adult help to make sure that it is an over the hill card.

Here are the materials they will need to make their over the hill card.

Construction paper
\r Crayons or markers
\r Stickers (over the hill stickers)
\r Over the hill poem (An adult will have to come up with this for the kids This is optional)
\r Glue (optional)

Fold one piece of paper in half so that it opens like a card does. Give them some stickers that they can use to decorate their card with. Then let them use their imaginations to decorate their cards. They can even put an over the hill poem inside of the card. An adult may have to come up with this. Then the children can either write it in the card or you can print out the poem and cut it to fit inside so that they can glue it in there. Some kids may be able to come up with their own poem.

This will be an over the hill card that they can be proud of. It will also be great for someones birthday because the person receiving it will like it even more because it was made by hand instead of bought. Let the kids have fun and be creative so they can each have a different card for whoever they want to give it to.

Gourd Enthusiasm Growing Around the World

October 22, 2008 By: admin Category: Hobby Crafts Comments Off

Gourds played an essential role in the daily life of early cultures. Commonly used as containers and vessels, they were also used for musical instruments. Some cultures used gourds for birdhouses and feeders and this is what most people today think of when they hear the word gourd. Or maybe you can remember a dipper made out of a gourd at Grandmas house years ago.

Now artists and crafts people have discovered a new medium to develop their creativity. Im not sure when the gourd craze officially started but it worked its way into my life about eight years ago by way of an article in a gardening magazine. It looked interesting and so that spring I decided to grow a couple gourd plants.

My first creations were, of course, birdhouses. Later, after some research and book purchases, the world of gourds exploded and I have found that the creative possibilities are limitless. Even if you cant come up with your own ideas there are a multitude of books and tutorials written by gourd artists and crafters explaining different techniques that can be done with gourds.

Gourd craft is working its way into the hands of accomplished artists who have found the gourd to be an exciting new way to showcase their art. They are not just for crafters anymore.

So now that you have gotten a little gourd enthusiasm of your own what comes next? Well, the gourd of course. Gourd growers and suppliers, once few and far between, are beginning to pop up everywhere. Many can be found on the internet.

Gourds come in all shapes and sizes, from minis to giants. The name of the gourd can give you a clue about the shape, such as egg, cannonball, canteen, basketball, bottle and so forth. You get the idea.

In order to work with the gourd it must be dry. If you happen to find gourds being sold in the fall at a farmers market they will most likely be freshly harvested. These will have to dry for a few months to a year or more depending on size. I personally dont like to purchase green gourds, as they are called, just in case they havent fully matured. Some growers new to the world of gourd craft dont understand the needs of the gourd artist. They are only concerned with growing gourds for fall decoration. A poorly grown gourd, instead of drying, may rot or have a shell too thin to work with.

Im in favor of buying gourds that have already dried. This way surprises and disappointments can be reduced. You still may have a few along the way though. When gourds dry they produce a moldy skin that eventually dries on the gourd. This skin has to be removed before art work can begin. After the skin is removed you may discover some holes or warts on your gourd. Or during cleaning you might discover your hard gourd has turned soft once you got it wet. This is the sign of a thin shell. There are things that can be done with a thin shell but for the most part we look for gourds with thick, sturdy shells.

To avoid these problems, look for cleaned, ready to craft gourds. These gourds have been cleaned for you. Cleaning is a messy job and you may not have the desire or area in which to do it yourself.

So come and join in the fun and find out for yourself the addicting powers of the gourd.

Beginner\’s Acrylic Painting - Paper Painting Surfaces - What You Need to Know

October 20, 2008 By: admin Category: Hobby Crafts Comments Off

Have you ever gone in to buy some paper for painting and been overwhelmed by the choice? You would think it would be a simple thing to buy a sheet of paper, wouldn\’t you? Well, it can be if you know what the different choices mean and how it can affect your finished painting.

Manufacturers have created a whole range of paper products for the artist. So many choices that unless you know what some of the terms mean it can be very confusing.

When you want your painting to last for a long time always go for acid-free. This is the type of paper used in archives.

The next thing is the surface texture of the paper, whether you want a fine texture or rough. You may be asking How do I know? I just want something to paint on!

The texture you choose will depend on your style of painting. If you like to have a lot of detail in your paintings you will need a smooth textured paper - in which case you want one that is Hot Pressed.

If you use a lot of watercolour (or watercolour style) washes then the paper you should choose will be Not. That means \’Not hot pressed\’. It has a bit more texture than Hot pressed papers.

If you paint a lot of landscapes and/or like granulation (which happens when the colours separate while they dry) you will probably like using Cold pressed papers. These have the roughest texture.

Papers are sold in weights. This affects the thickness of the paper. Papers that are less than 300-lb or 640gsm (grams per square metre) will need to be stretched before painting. If you dont stretch the paper it will buckle when wet making painting difficult and the paint will dry in the hollows giving a disappointing result.

Stretching paper needs to be done in advance and the paper allowed to dry before you use it. You will need a clean drawing board, some 1 inch wide gum strip, and water to soak the paper in (the bath is handy for this).

Soak the paper in the water until it is saturated, this will take less than a minute. Place the paper onto the board and smooth it out from the centre to the edges.

Cut pieces of gum strip to fit the length and the width of the paper, plus a couple of inches. Dampen the gum strip and use it to stick the longer edges of the paper to the board, and then do the shorter edges. Smooth out the paper and the gum strip and leave it to dry naturally and on the horizontal. Do not place it near a heater!

If you just want to paint without needing to prepare the paper, there are pads of ready stretched paper that save you having to do this yourself. These pads have the paper glued around the edges and you paint on the top of the pad. Once you\’ve finished the painting and it is completely dry, a knife is inserted at one of the edges and moved around the sides to cut through the glue and free the top layer.

It is a good investment to buy good quality paper. It is much easier to use, and gives a better result.

Next time you need to buy paper think about how you like to paint, and it will be much easier to decide on the type of paper to buy.

Leather Work Tips

October 20, 2008 By: admin Category: Hobby Crafts Comments Off

For leather work, consider the basics: an awl and spare point, a retractable X-acto knife \r and spare blades, a retractable knife with a break-off blade and a rotary punch. In \r addition, youll need needles, a lump of beeswax and some waxed linen thread.

As well, a pair of pliers to pull the needle through the leather is a must, and scissors you \r can use for cutting the leather. Then there are edge slickers and bevellers that are used to \r finish the edges, drive punches for bigger holes and thong cutters for making laces. A \r T-square, compass and yardstick are essential to ensure that your leather work is \r measured accurately.

If youre just starting out with leather work, you might not want to spend a lot of money \r on tools. Once youve worked with the basic set and completed a few projects, youll \r have a better idea of what tools work best and what you use most. At that point, a little \r research and some comparative shopping can lead you to acquiring some better quality \r tools that will enhance your leather work.

Of course, even the most expensive tools wont help if you havent taken the time to \r develop and perfect your craft. If you do your very best with what you have, it doesnt \r matter if you cant afford the most expensive awl or the latest knife. \r Quality will show \r anyway.

Tips and Tricks:

* Start with a basic tool set.

* Buy better quality tools once youve completed some \r projects and have a better idea of what will enhance the quality of your leather work.

* Study the various types of leather before starting.

Tooling Leather

There are many different types of leather available, some better than others, depending \r upon the project you have in mind. Vegetable-tanned leather, also called tooling leather, \r has been processed using vegetable dyes rather than chemicals. Its usually flesh-colored \r and is excellent for a variety of projects, especially if the top is to be stamped or tooled.

Because it has a relatively rigid structure, this type of leather is ideal for leather work items \r like book covers and belts.

Latigo

Oil-tanned leather, also called latigo, unlike other leathers, has a waxy surface and is ideal \r for leather work projects where durability and flexibility are a must, such as for tack and \r saddles. Avoid using it though if you dont want the finished product to have stretch and \r flexibility, such as in dog collars. Bear in mind also that it cant be tooled or stamped.

Top Grain Leather

Top grain leather has one smooth side, called grain, which is the skin side, and a rough \r inner side, the flesh side. Either side can be used, rough or smooth.

Chrome-Tanned Leather

Chrome-tanned leather is dyed with modern chemicals such as chromium and comes in a \r variety of colors, is often white on one side, though the cut edges can be a different color \r than the facing. Its relatively inexpensive, but not very breathable, and cant be tooled or \r stamped because its too soft for leather work and it\’s waterproof

Weight of Leather

Leather thickness is given in ounces. The heavier the weight, the thicker the leather is.

Calf or goat skin is generally 2 ounces or 1/32 inch thick. One ounce is 1/64th of an inch \r thick. On the other end of the scale, 8 ounce leather is usually 1/8 inch thick.

Summary:

* Tooling leather is the best choice for most leather work projects.

* Latigo leather is great for durables like tack and saddles.

* Choose suede and garment leather when making clothing.

* The heavier the weight of leather, the thicker it is.

* When ordering leather through the mail, try some sample swatches first.

* Keep your leather soft and supple with the proper oil.

Starting Your Own Art Collection? - Where to Begin

October 19, 2008 By: admin Category: Hobby Crafts Comments Off

You would like to have artworks of your own, perhaps start an art collection, or buy a special art gift. How do you start?

First, second and last: look! Go to galleries and museums, (even if at first they seem cold or intimidating, they are there to be seen), art fairs and shows. The Internet has become a great place to explore and buy contemporary art and has its own special advantages: comfortable to see, easy on the gas bill, no pressure, easy to purchase, easy access to information.

Dont buy right away. Take time to develop your eye and know your heart. Come back to the same place or site many times, each time picking your favorite. You will probably see that this changes over time, and that you notice more and more interesting aspects of the artwork. Ultimately, what you like best always includes an element of mystery that cant be totally explained. That makes buying art different from buying anything else. But whether for an investment or purely for pleasure, experience in looking and information about the artwork and artist can inform your decision.

Your opinion is what matters, not that of a salesperson or a critic. Even so, reading about art can sharpen your opinions and accustom you to the special vocabulary of art: tools for enjoying art more.

When youre ready to buy, think why.For a specific place in your home? To capture something beautiful? For the positive emotional experience, spiritual uplift, intellectual stimulation? For an investment? All of these separately or in any combination as well as other reasons are good reasons to acquire an artwork. In doing so, you also contribute to society by supporting artists who access and enhance our culture. Clarifying your goals will help you choose the right artwork at the right time.

Budget and Prices. When you have educated your eye and taken an interest in what you see; when you are ready to find the artwork for you, you must consider how much you want to spend and how works of art are priced. Price is somewhat subjective, as is what you will like. It is difficult for most artists to set a monetary value on an expression from their heart. An artist may ask a lot for a favorite piece, being reluctant to part with it. Another may lower prices because of a need for cash. The price of most works, however, is indeed connected to objective variables:

Medium. The graphic media: sketches and prints are usually less expensive, as is watercolor on paper. You can, therefore usually find good buys of fine art in these media. In general, oils on canvas will be more expensive, as will sculpture. Photography in recent years has been going up in price, but is still a place where beginning collectors can find wonderful art for reasonable prices.

Work involved. The amount of work put into a piece, connected to medium, can be a factormore work being more expensive, but not always. More time spent on a work of art does not necessarily make it better. A sketch that Rembrandt did in minutes can be worth a fortune!

Size. In general, the larger, the more expensive (large works involve more materials, although this is usually a small part of the cost, but they are more difficult and involve more work.) Miniatures are a category of their own, where the artist makes a window to a tiny other world.

The Artist.Younger and less well-known artists will generally charge less. This is the point at which the sharp-eyed buyer who knows what he/she likes loves to buy. Here are opportunities for good long-term investments, as well as encouraging upcoming creative forces.

The Market. Site and gallery managers will guide the artist in determining value by knowing the present market.

Dont forget that in your final decision, what is most important is your own response to a work of art. Without a doubt, art is a whole world waiting to enhance your home and enrich your life. Enjoy the variety of choice and the very unique pleasure of finding your own special artistic creations.

Buying art is different from acquiring other products. When you buy something that you like very much, you will usually find yourself loving it more and more. A complex and mature work of art reveals many layers of meaning and appeal as time goes by. You are enriching your life and shaping your environment. Enjoy!

A Brief History of Candles

October 18, 2008 By: admin Category: Hobby Crafts Comments Off

For centuries mans progress has been lighted by candles. However, people know only very few things about the origin of candles. It has been written that the first candles were made by the Ancient Egyptians. They used rushlights, or torches, made by soaking the pithy core of reeds in molten tallow. Unlike the candles, the rushlights had no wick. The Romans were the ones who it is said to have developed the wick candle. They used it to help travellers at dark, and to light homes and places of worship during the night.

America\’s first contribution to candle-making was made by colonial women who discovered that if they boiled the grayish green berries of bayberry bushes they got a sweet-smelling wax that burned clean. But it was extremely tedious to extract the wax from the bayberries so their popularity soon diminished. The first important change in candle making since the Middle Ages was bought by the growth of the whaling industry in the late 18th century. Spermaceti, a wax obtained by crystallizing sperm whale oil, was available in large quantities. The spermaceti wax, as well as beeswax, did not smell unpleasantly when burned. Even more importantly, spermaceti wax was harder than tallow and beeswax and it did not soften or bend because of the summer heat. Historians write that the first candles as we know them were made from spermaceti wax.

During the 19th century, people made most of the changes in candle making. In 1834, Joseph Morgan, invented a machine, which allowed continuous production of candles by the use of a cylinder, which had a movable piston that ejected candles as they solidified. Today, they are no longer a major source of light for people, but candles continue to be very popular and useful. Candles mean celebration, romance, ceremony, and can be an object of dcor, while casting the same warm and enjoyable well-known glow.
