Are You Really Over There?

October 23, 2008 By: admin Category: Inspirational Quote Comments Off

I am reading The Self Aware Universe by Amit Goswami and have been deeply drawn to the point that there is only one consciousness in a manner that greatly shifted my awareness. There is not your consciousness over there and mine over here. We think from the same mind. We dwell in the same mind source.

Our vocabulary should not contain I, me, you and them. What would happen if we said, We think, we feel, we know? One consciousness, one mind, one thought. My consciousness is not separate from yours. Yours is the same consciousness as mine. We are one big thought, one mind.

I so want to cling on to my individuality, my uniqueness, my personal talents and achievements. How do I make this shift? How do I merge with and accept one mind, one consciousness as my reality?

I rather like the analogy of the Cosmic Soupthat I am seasoning that affects the Cosmic soup which contains all there is, but that still makes me feel separate as it puts the emphasis back on me and my particular flavor.

The analogy of the ocean and my being a drop in that ocean works a bit better, first exists the ocean, then me as a drop.

But that still keeps me separate. How can I become truly aware of my role in one consciousness?

I cant get there from my body suit although I want to.

I believe that my thoughts of peace affect the whole group consciousnesses, but even the word group suggests separate and many. And I believe I am affected by the group consciousness just as someone adding salt would affect the taste of the Cosmic Soup.

I can only feel my consciousness when I lose myself, when I move into an inner silence so deep that my body disappears, my sense of self disappears. I no longer exist, I am absorbed and melded into something so all pervading, all encompassing that I lose all sense of self.

Can I feel my consciousness as part of yours? I can feel your energy. I can feel your love, I can feel your vibration but Im not sure I can yet feel that you and I have and are the same consciousness.

Can I feel my consciousness being the same as my cats? Can I feel my consciousness as the same as the trees along my walk and the insects in my garden and the rocks along my path?

There are moments as I walk my life journey that I can experience that feeling. As I gaze in wonder at a magnificent mountain, or watch a spectacular sun rise and sun set. I can catch glimpses of it in meditation and in moments when I stop to listen and feel. I cannot yet walk my life in constant awareness of my total interconnection with all. And I am willing to learn to do so.

My consciousness is not separate from yours. Your consciousness is not separate from mine. We are of One Mind.

I shall walk though my day with a deeper awareness and try to capture our sameness.

I disappear
\r I disappear
\r Into stillness
\r I disappear
\r Into stillness
\r And find home

Staying Awake - It\’s NOT about sleep

October 22, 2008 By: admin Category: Inspirational Quote Comments Off

Observing a holiday now known as Civil Rights Day I am reminded that it has been almost forty years since the Reverend Martin Luther King gave his last Sunday sermon. In March of 1968, Dr. King gave a talk entitled Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution. His point was that while we were living amid a period of extreme social change, many of us were failing to develop the new attitudes and mental responses required by new situations. We were, in his words, sleeping through the revolution.

Does this sound familiar? How could this sermon possibly still have life and application so many years later especially to seniors like us, living and working in Northern New England?

Youre probably not surprised to see that I think it is applicable to each of our personal revolutions associated with aging. While perhaps the word revolution most readily brings to mind sudden and momentous change, it also refers to cycles, as in a revolution around the sun. Personally I think there are times that both definitions can be applied to aging. Some days seniorhood seems like a sudden and momentous change while on others it is just another trip around the sun.

Whichever definition we choose, we would do well to stop and ask ourselves whether or not we are sleeping through the revolution. Do we age without consciously recognizing that it brings change, new opportunities and new challenges? Or, are we living in the past, sleep-walking through life, reading Reminiscence and pining for the good old days?

With apologies to Carly Simon, these might just be the good old days. Maybe we should all be spending more time looking forward to whats coming next savoring our goals, dreams and plans for the next week, the next year or the next decade. Are you planning an exotic vacation or expecting a visit from friends or family? Reviewing college catalogues or planning to learn something new?

What do you hope for? What are you doing to get it?

Great Quotes: "Sometimes, You Have To Go A Long Distance Out Of Your Way"

October 22, 2008 By: admin Category: Inspirational Quote Comments Off

How did you see your path in life so early? Ive been asked, a number of times.

If I have, or if it seems I have, its probably because I read widely, and various insights and quotations stick with me, and Ive used them for guidance.

One of them comes from the Edward Albee play: The Zoo Story.

Jerry, a key character, is lecturing someone who is sitting on a bench in New Yorks Central Park.

Suddenly, he blurts out, Sometimes you have to go a long distance out of your way to come back a short distance, correctly.

While this notion may not seem earthshaking on the surface, I promise you, if you review your own life, youll appreciate the wisdom in it.

For instance, on more than one occasion Ive left a job, or even a major career focus, only to return to it later. The second time around, my eyes are wide open, and Im seeing and appreciating things that I just didnt catch, at first.

Perhaps I wasnt ready for the task, initially, or I just wanted to go back to discern if my judgments about it were correct, initially.

Anyway, it seems like an offbeat way of living, but theres satisfaction in it.

What about those souls who hop from job to job, seemingly without focus, yet something happens to them and they see a thread in their experience, something that unifies it and gives it coherence.

Many public speakers have had this occur in their lives. They were just moseying along when something special happened, perhaps a UFO abduction, or an epiphany came to them.

And then, they just had to tell the world about it.

Observers ask them, Why didnt you just go into speaking straight away? or Imagine how much better off youd be today if you had launched your oratorical career, earlier!

Or, think about the person who grows up in a small town, cant wait to leave for the big city; does it, spending the better part of his life there, yet returns in middle age to the place of his roots.

Life doesnt always work neatly, in a linear way.

Sometimes you just have to go a long distance out of your way to come back a short distance, correctly!

Blasting Out of the Shadows: The Power of Your True Voice

October 21, 2008 By: admin Category: Inspirational Quote Comments Off

First, let me share a quote from Ashlee Simpsons latest hit, Shadow. Yes, I really am quoting Ashlee Simpson.

Somebody listen please/
\r It used to be so hard being me/
\r Living in the shadow/
\r Of someone elses dream/
\r Trying to find a hand to hold but every touch felt cold to me/
\r Living in a nightmare/
\r A never-ending sleep/
\r But now that I am wide awake/
\r My chains are finally free/
\r Dont feel sorry for me

Many of my clients are living exactly as Ms. Simpson described: in the shadow of \r someone elses dream. Or according to expectations others put on her. Or behind a \r mask she thought she had to wear to be successful.

Have you ever been in a situation where your gut leads you in a different direction \r than everyone else, but you went along with the group just to fit in? It happens all \r the time.

Entrepreneurs follow advice of investors, who arent nearly as invested in the \r success of the business as the founder. Could this be why so many new businesses \r fail?

New students follow the rules of the popular kids, just so they dont stand out at \r their new school. Could this be why many kids suddenly stop doing activities they \r enjoyed/were good at?

Women executives feel the need to follow some rules made up by the male-\r dominated corporate culture, because someone told them they had to in order to be \r successful. Could this be why many companies have trouble achieving their goals?

While the bullets above may not be the direct causes of failure or disappointment, \r they certainly do not help to set the stage for success.

This is not merely about making sure everyone feels heard. Its about something \r more basic: making sure everyone is speaking in his or her true voice.

Now you may be thinking, What the heck is my true voice? Ive got one voice I use \r at work, another voice I use with my kids, a third voice I use with my friends, and a \r completely different voice I use with my spouse or partner. I argue that if thats the \r case for you, youre wasting your energy.

Once you find your true voice and start letting it out on a regular basis, youll find \r great and wonderful things begin to happen. For example, when I first started my \r practice, I wrote my marketing materials in the voice that the experts told me to. \r (All these experts are white men, by the way.) Lo and behold, I had trouble \r attracting clients. As soon as I rewrote everything in my true voice, which reflects \r my true passion and mission for what I do, my practice started filling up! Divine \r coincidence? I dont think so.

So how do you find your true voice? Here are the easy-to-follow steps:\r 1. Notice when youre using your true voice. Youll know by the ease with which \r your ideas come out, and the lack of nagging your conscience does afterwards. Pay \r attention and reward yourself for speaking with truth.

2. Trust your gut. Coaches say this a lot. Personal coaches say it to their clients; \r athletic coaches say it to their greatest performers. We say it for a reason: its true. \r Your gut really does know whats right for you. The more you trust it, the more \r youll be able to hear it.

3. Change what you can. If you can rewrite/redo things you did using a false \r voice, please do so. Note the consequences of putting your message in your real \r voice.

The currently much-beleaguered Ms. Simpson changes her refrain at the end:

I\’m living in a new day/
\r I\’m living it for me/
\r And now that I am wide awake/
\r Then I can finally be/
\r Don\’t feel sorry for me

Now this may sound a bit selfish, but

Being your best and truest you is the best goal anyone can have.

So, rip off the mask and come blasting out of the shadow! Let the world see who \r you really are!

Your Perceptions Create Your Reality

October 21, 2008 By: admin Category: Inspirational Quote Comments Off

Your perceptions create your reality, which is why it is critical that you be aware of your perceptions and be open to new perceptions. If you believe that \’they\’ are out to get you, or that \’they\’ want to keep you down, you will behave in such a way as to prove that point. I had discussion with friends recently about a woman\’s rise to power and the glass ceiling. Is there a glass ceiling, or do you perceive that there is one and act as though there is? If there are five partners in the firm and one of them is a woman, do you decide that there is not room for you because the one \’token\’ woman has the position? Does your behavior reflect that position? Do you get resentful? Do you look for another job or do you step up to the plate and ask for a partnership? Do you give up and say it won\’t happen to you or do you see future opportunities?

If you leave an organization because you do not want to work the hours, or because you no longer choose to live in a suit, do you blame your decision on lack of opportunity, or do you think you made a positive choice for you and your family? There are woman who choose to stay and move up the ranks, that is their choice and they reap those rewards. You can choose differently for different reasons.

When I speak around the country to different groups, I often hear how perceptions color experiences. I see it in young people; often they feel that they are not being taken seriously, or that people perceive that they are \’bad\’. They want be taken seriously no matter how they dress, speak or participate within a group. They don\’t want to change, but they want you to change how you perceive them. Life just doesn\’t work that way.

I recently spoke to a minority conference committee of mid level managers who volunteered for their professional association. They were adamant that this year they did not want to \’have fun\’ at their conference, because they wanted to be perceived as serious and career oriented. They felt that too many professionals and leaders from other divisions, groups and ethnicities were coming to their conference because it was \’fun\’, and that \’those\’ people would perceive their group as not being career oriented, focused, accomplished and smart.

A group of consultants and senior management leaders who heard their rationale were stunned. These senior leaders were stunned because the perceptions of the volunteers were opposite of how they, the leaders, felt.

Senior leaders thought the minority professional association conference was a winner because so many different people attended. They held the conference as an example for others. If people are choosing to come (given all the demands on their time), the organizers are doing something right!

The volunteers thought that it was terrible that the leaders and senior staff came because the conference was fun.

Senior leaders thought the volunteer organizers had been creative and strategic about marketing past conferences. Making the events fun, on purpose, in order to market and reach diverse leaders while providing outstanding workshops.

The volunteers thought the conference should be a \’professional conference\’, serious and intense. They felt the \’fun factor\’ diminished their abilities in the eyes of the leaders. The volunteers were more focused on what they thought people perceived without every researching or evaluating why leaders and professionals came.

Their belief in their perceptions prevented the volunteers from enhancing the conference. Their perceptions prevented them from asking \”How can we use our assets, to build a more effective network and leverage those relationships for more opportunities for our members?\” Their assets: having diverse leaders and professionals attend the conference because they enjoyed the conference.

It was the organizers own perceptions and later their decisions based on those perceptions that sabotaged their conference. They marketed the conference as serious and career oriented. Attendance went down; they complained that the senior management and members of other groups and divisions did not support them. They never took responsibility for their own actions based on their negative perceptions.

In a global market you need to be careful about your perceptions and how you may be sabotaging yourself and opportunities in the world.

My daughter and mother are traveling through India. They are in a small town in the Himalayas. My daughter experienced altitude sickness and was rushed to the local hospital. I didn\’t hear about the episode until three days later. I learned that she had three shots and six hours of oxygen. Andi has never been sick in her life; she waited to go the other side of the world to get sick. What was fascinating to me was how people, in my network, were concerned about the quality of care she received. Without knowing where she was, without knowing anything about the health care system, people had perceptions about the quality of care. They perceived that she received poor quality care. They based their perceptions on media images and stories.

Meanwhile, my daughter and mom wrote glowing emails about the quality of care and the hospital staff. Here are two drastically different perceptions. My family chose the more positive and optimistic perception based on real data. The result was one very calm Mom and Dad (my husband and I). Andi is okay and loves being in India. If you live in India, thank you for welcoming my family to your country.

Dr. Lisa Whitten and Dr. Linda Anderson wrote \”The Psychology of African-American Success: The Internal Dialogue\”. In the article they stated, \”if the negative self-statements (perceptions) are not acknowledged, understood or resolved, they can lead to self-sabotaging behaviors and attitudes. These behaviors and attitudes are usually out of your awareness. Moreover, some of the negative self-statements appear perfectly rational and reasonable, because they are sometimes reflected in the folk wisdom of your [African-American] communities. These notions are often unquestioned and therefore accepted by many people. For example, John Ogbu, Ph.D. an anthropologist has studied barriers to achievement motivation among African-American high school students, pointing to the perception that students who are \”smart\” are \”acting white\” or \”think they are white.\”

They go on to discuss that if a person perceives that that they will be ostracized from their group for behaving differently, they will sabotage their own desires to change and achieve.

When I was living in the Bronx and was hanging around with a rough crowd, people perceived me as being crazy, mean and violent. When I walked with my friends people passing us would walk to the other side of the street. I remember thinking that it was such a joke, most of the time we just acted tough. Yes, there were fights and yes there were times that I was scared, but most of the time you played on people\’s perceptions of who you wanted them to think you were.

I was miserable, I knew that I was meant for more than hanging out on a corner and that the group I was spending my time with was not success oriented at all. I had to leave and move on. I never shared my desire for a better life with them. I knew what they would say to me and how they would tease me. I also knew that if I stayed my future would be bleak. My older sister was a heroin addict and was well known among this group of people.

I left and lived in Spain for three years. During that time and after returning home, I had the perception that people didn\’t think I was as good as them because of my past. I finally realized it was all in my head. They didn\’t know about my past.

I learned a long time ago that I can not know what someone else is thinking. I learned that often what I perceived was going on was not. I was basing my perceptions on old thought patterns. If I perceived that they didn\’t like me, or that they are against me because of my background, I acted like they didn\’t like me or were against me. My behavior and their reactions towards my behavior validated my perceptions.

As I got older I sought information about how to become the person I wanted to be. I changed my behavior, my dress, my outlook on life and people responded differently to me. I had to change first before others \’perceived\’ me differently.

People reacted to my perceptions of my self and I could change my perceptions, thereby changing their behavior towards me. The only thing I was manipulating was my own mind, my own thoughts and my own actions, so that I reaped the rewards. It worked.

How about you? What perceptions are you focused on? That \’they\’ are against you? Or are you saying to yourself, \”I\’m great and I am open to receiving support, advise and opportunities\” Depending on your thoughts and perceptions you reap the results in your life.

\”There is in this world, no such force as the force of a {wo}man determined to rise.\”\r ~W.E.B. DuBois

Try-its:

To start changing your thoughts you need to know the thoughts that you are thinking. Look at your life and career right now. What isn\’t working? Are you lonely? Are you in debt? Have you been passed over for a promotion? Are you meeting your goals? Are your direct reports calling in sick or not producing?

When you focus on these issues what thoughts go through your head. What do you BELIEVE about the situation, the people, or the institution?

Write these thoughts down. Make as long list. Write until nothing else comes up.\r These are your self-defeating attitudes. They limit your ability to seek solutions. When you focus on these beliefs then there is no solution. As a matter of fact you end up getting deeper the problem or situation becoming worse.

Now take each statement and change it into a positive statement. Write the complete opposite of the statements you wrote. Make them action oriented for today.

These are your self-affirming attitudes, here is an example:

The issue is: your assistant is leaving.

What do you BELIEVE about the situation, the people, or the institution?

* She was the best assistant I ever had. It will be really hard to replace her.

* No one has ever been able to work with me the way she has

What other beliefs are popping in your head?

* I can\’t find a replacement for her

* I hate interviewing people

* Why does she have to leave?

* Great just when I needed her most

These are examples of self-defeating attitudes.

Now take each statement and change it into a positive statement

* She was a great assistant and I know I will find someone with her skills and more

* I know that she and I made a great team. I now know that I am part of a great team and I\’m looking for my new and improved partner.

* I know that my network knows a great new assistant

* I love meeting new people and learning about their skills, passion and desires.

* My assistant has great opportunities and I want the best for her. This opens new doors to grow for me.

* She has taught me new skills and processes that make my office run efficiently. I know that I can manage while waiting for my new assistant.

These are examples of self-affirming attitudes.

Kick-butt actions:

Be aware of how your perceptions are affecting others.

Meditating with Angels

October 20, 2008 By: admin Category: Inspirational Quote Comments Off

There are numerous angels listed in both oral and written tradition. The four most commonly known are the archangels. According to Jewish tradition, the four archangels are Michael, Gabriel, Uriel, and Raphael. Each angel is assigned duties to which no other attends, yet as one studies the various angels, one can find contradictions to this principle. \r The duty of Michael is thought to be that of a messenger of God, that of Gabriel to represent the strength of God, Uriel represents the light of God, and Raphael represents the healing power of God.

The purpose of this article is to outline a method of meditation that includes the guidance of the four archangels. The process involves finding a quiet place where you will not be disturbed. Sit with your back upright. This allows your energy to flow up the spine. Notice what is going on in your body. Feel your chest rise and fall as the air enters and leaves with each breath. Notice your breathing, and whenever you notice thoughts coming into your mind, reflect again on the experience of your body and your breathing.

Now call upon the four archangels. Ask Michael to be at your right and be open to any messages God has for you. Ask Gabriel to be on your left side. Many mystics believe that evil or death approaches from the left. Imagine Gabriel is there to protect you during your meditation. Ask Uriel to be in front of you to light the way. Ask Raphael to be behind you to support you while you are sitting in meditation. You may also ask him to help heal you of physical or emotional problems you may be experiencing. The four archangels now surround you and protect you during your meditation. At this point, you can imagine a huge cloud of white light overhead, representing the Shekhina. The Shekhina represents the feminine aspect or nature of God. However you wish to think of it, allow this light to descend on you and surround you with love and tender protection. Allow a feeling of peace to enter your mind. You are in a state of infinite security, safety, and kindness.

Pay attention to your breathing. As you inhale, think the word, Yah (pronounced as Ya), and as you exhale, think the word Weh (pronounced Way). This is considered the sacred name of God, and is derived from the tetragammaton (IHVH, JHVH, YHVH or YHWH, which in Hebrew is Yud Hei Vav Hei). It is the Hebrew tribal name of the Supreme Being, which for fear of desecration, the Jews about three centuries before the birth of Christ, ceased to pronounce. They substituted for it the word, Adonai, which means master. The vowel points that were included as directions on how to read it were misinterpreted and gave rise to the Christian form Jehovah. Thinking the word Yah and Weh as you coordinate the syllables with your breathing will not violate the taboo of pronouncing the word out loud.

Meditate on the word for approximately twenty minutes each morning and evening. When you are ready to end the meditation, do not get up abruptly and go about your daily or evening activities. End the meditation in the reverse order of how you began it. Ask the Shekhina to rise again above your head. Thank each of the archangels in the order that you invited them to take their place around you. Let them go about their duties.

You may feel a lasting effect of this meditation throughout your day, and a peaceful night of sleep. If you do this consistently, you should realize great benefits. You may gain insights into your life and inspiration involving problems you wish to solve. Do not approach the meditation with a view to solving a certain problem, however. It is always best to enter each meditation without an agenda. Let happen whatever is supposed to happen. Trust the archangels and the Shekhina to guide and direct your life.

Creating Your Miracle In 7 Steps

October 19, 2008 By: admin Category: Inspirational Quote Comments Off

Acknowledge where you are right now and realize that it is where you are supposed to be. Request your Miracle from this standpoint.

Destiny is knowing that things are going to happen, as if by accident, when they are needed to occur. This is a kind of divine intervention that is a gift from the universe. We need to acknowledge our destiny.

Insight is realizing that you will be guided by your Heart. This intuition will guide you to make decisions. Your decisions are correct even though they appear incorrect after they are made. This intuitive process is allowing you to make the mistakes that you need to learn and move forward in life to fulfill your destiny.

Before a Miracle can occur you need to visualize it, see it happening and write it down. A spiritual Miracle can occur when you bring it into reality by the actual practice of writing it in the physical world. Your faith in the Miracle is what transforms the universe to bring your destiny. A conviction to make it happen is the fuel to starting the fire within.

Taking action on a daily basis will give you the Motivation to transform your physical life into greatness in which Miracles do happen. Without action on your part you will stay the same. Use your insight to dream of the action steps that you need to take to manifest your Miracle. Action is the kindling to get you started.

Conviction is that you can change your life and will. Without conviction you will flounder. This takes effort and action. It is not easy. By realizing that Love is the answer, you will seek it. You will have a greater conviction to give more of the love that is inside of you to others. Love begets Love and motivates your transformation.

Devotional Love is when you see the Love in all people and everything everywhere. When you start to see this, you will see the beauty and love everywhere in the universe. This insight will take your conviction to majestic levels.

Have gratitude for everything that occurs in your life. What happens in your life is guiding you to your destiny. When you give back gratitude for your daily experience, the universe will be gratuitous in kind. Your life will seem to turn around.Giving and receiving are the yin/yang of the universe.

You manifest your destiny by creating a Miracle plan. When you follow these 7 steps your life will become one of mystery, magic, luck and surprising adventure.

Perception

October 19, 2008 By: admin Category: Inspirational Quote Comments Off

My friend Donald said to me one evening, this is what I admire about you, whenever you say youre gonna to do something, YOU DO IT! People always ask me how do I stay motivated? How do I stay encouraged? Whenever I am asked this question my answer is always the same. I tell them that I stay focused and motivated by remaining in an autopilot mode. However, when I ponder that question on a deeper spiritual level, I come to the realization that the true answer is much more involved than the auto-pilot response. Would you like to know what the real answer is? Keep reading.

For those of you that follow my writing, you may have read a story that I wrote entitled Zenobias Life Lessons A True Testament of Love. In that narrative, I briefly tapped on the fact that I once lived in a shelter. How I ended up in a shelter in the first place was because my job downsized and relocated to Atlanta. My employer offered me the chance to keep my job by moving with the company, but unfortunately, they only offered financial relocation assistance to the higher ups. So there I was. Two young children to support and the future for employment looked grim.

I applied for unemployment and ultimately had to apply for Welfare for the first time in my life. During this time, I began to prepare my children to live in a place that in my opinion at the time, was the worst case scenario in the WORLD. My children were about 7 and 8 years-old. I knew how impressionable young children were at that age, so it was acute to their emotional development the manner in which I informed them of the news.

My children and I used to have what we called family rap sessions. These sessions took place once per week, usually after dinner while sitting in a circle on our living-room floor, or during dinner seated at the kitchen table. My children grew to love and look forward to these sessions because it gave them the opportunity to vent to me anything, in any manner (remembering that I was still the parent of course), and I could and would not reprimand them for what we discussed afterwards. We simply would talk and I would offer suggestions and solutions for them to handle any of the small problems that a child would encounter at their young age. I learned years later that this was the enzyme for the open relationship that I maintain with them to this day.

This is when I broke the news. We would be moving soon so I paid careful attention when describing the shelter to them. It was significant that they quickly developed a positive outlook on where their new home would soon be. I centered their attention on a few of the key things that they could do while living there that I disallowed or did not provide to them while living in our home. I figured that this was a way to encourage them to become excited about our move.

I told them what happened with the job and that we had to move out of our apartment soon. After each of them asked me where we would be moving to, I described this wonderful place, where kids could all play together after school (my children were latch-key kids, and werent allowed to go outside after school having to come home and do homework). I described a place where they would get unlimited food and snacks, (I never bought sugary; drinks and limited the amount of snacks that I kept in the house). I told them how we each would have our own beds (they used to share a bed), and they would get the opportunity to meet and play with other boys and girls. At the shelter, bedtime was moved back an hour later to 10:00. If you have ever been 7 or 8 years-old, when a parent tells you that your bed and playtimes were going to be extended, that was more than enough reason to look forward to going to this place wouldnt you think?

The Place. That is the code-name we agreed to use when speaking about the shelter (I trained my children to be really good at keeping a secret, and they were. I am sure that this was due to the fact when I was young, I was such a BLABBER mouth. As a result of growing up and understanding the significance of keeping a secret, I developed an inbred disrespect for those who could or would not keep their mouths closed.). That was our code word used when we were discussing the shelter amongst people that we knew. I did not want anyone to know that we were living there. I was ashamed. During this time, no one ever found out. I was extremely mortified for being in that situation and I was still trying to come to grips with hitting rock bottom and having to go there in the first place, even though my children adjusted impressively well.

Until I had to experience life in a shelter as an eyewitness, I looked at those who lived in these alien places and wondered what happened in their lives that put them there? That would never be me, or so I thought.

Usually when you hear the word SHELTER, at least for me, I envisioned and related those places to the types of people that I expected to live there. People taking food from garbage cans, dirty, grimy people begging for money, bodies covered with paper bags while lying on park benches. Others sleeping in subways, walking the streets pushing shopping carts filled with what appeared to me to be nothing more than garbage. Not realizing that to the person pushing the cart, the contents often held their entire life. How do those sayings go? One mans garbage is another mans gold? Dont judge a man until youve walked a mile in his shoes? No truer sayings were ever penned.

I learned from this experience just because you live, and maybe even sleep in the street, does not necessarily mean that you are dirty or grimy for that matter. You just do not have a descent place to call home. The average person is just a paycheck away from being homeless anyway arent they? That is what I was told most of my life.

Immediately, and I mean as soon as I put my hand on the doorknob to open the doors to the Place, I began to see just how wrong my perception of the homeless and shelters really were.

How did I get here? I asked myself, as I led my children inside. I was neither dirty nor grimy. I did not beg others for money. My body was never covered with paper bags to shield the evening wind from my person, nor did I push a cart filled with what appeared to be garbage. I just did not have a place to live. I became one of the very people that I grew up loathing. I was one of THEM now. I had become one of the homeless. TALK ABOUT THE SHOE BEING ON THE OTHER FOOT!!!!

Life was always and continues to be my BEST teacher, coupled with final exams that are powerfully honest.

I remember for the duration of my stay at the Place, especially around shower time, when my children would play and eagerly jump into the stall to wash their little bodies, I stood in the shadows as a guard ensuring no harm would come to my little life sources. Nonetheless, after the little ones were snuggled in bed, I too stood in the shower. However, I was not lathering my body to simultaneously relieve my mind of the tribulations that I contended with day-to-day as I should have. Nor was I luxuriating in the gratification that one feels as you allow the rhythmical current of warm water to cleanse away your 9 to 5 anxieties. Uh-uh. Not this time. Want to know what I was doing? Crying.

I knew in order for my children to continue to have a positive perception of the Place, I had to become their compass. Subconsciously they received their direction of how they were supposed to feel about living in this new environment from my actions and/or reactions. Hence, I had to put on my game face. I had to be ready to play my A game e-a-c-h-and-e-v-e-r-y morning. Miraculously I trained myself to remain in autopilot mode. I did not allow myself to think about what had to be done. I just did whatever had to be done for the emotional betterment of my children. I did not want them to walk away from the Place feeling less than or not as good as because they had to live in a shelter. I did not want them to feel the shame and guilt that I was saturated with 24-7. After all, I was the adult. I was supposed to be able to rationalize my situation and handle it wasnt I? I was supposed to take charge, make everything better. Essentially, on the outside I performed as though my stay there was as gratifying as drinking an ice-cold glass of lemonade on a lazy, muggy Sunday afternoon. I should have won an Academy Award for my performance.

For weeks each night, while everyone was fast asleep, in the darkness, I stood. Barefoot, in the corner of a damp, rusty, stale smelling shower stall, swallowed up by my aloneness, I cried. I stuffed my washcloth deep inside my mouth to muffle my robust sounds of hopelessness. I would repeat this late night ritual for the duration of my stay at the Place.

My children never knew the anguish and torment that I withstood because of our living arrangement until approximately several years later when I decided to once-and-for-all justify us living in a shelter. I was still harboring guilt for placing them in such a place. Even then, years later while sharing and clarifying my grief to them, I cried. This time we all wept together. They were growing up. They understood.

The real answer to how I stay motivated and encouraged is due to my perception of life. The way I perceive life is indicative to the way that I respond to lifes challenges. During my stay at the Place life so affirmatively atoned me in an earth shattering way. Today, when faced with a situation, a task, or a problem that initially appears to be too much for me to handle, I am reminded of my stay at the Place.

Today, I ALWAYS ensure that I have a job, I ALWAYS ensure that I have my OWN house or apartment. I ALWAYS try to exude a rock-of-Gibraltar persona when forced to mesh with lifes ups and downs. I have to. There is no alternative for ME.

In conclusion, I believe if a person can live on the streets and survive off of the remnants found in the pit of a garbage can, if they can, make gold from discarded junk and generate heat to warm their bodies from plastic and/or paper bags on a day-to-day basis, my life and the slings and arrows and uncertainties that I must brave are as easy as taking candy from a baby. My perception in and of itself, is what motivates ME to survive.

How you view a situation dictates the outcome. Perception is everything. Whether you want to believe it or not, and everything is perception.

Six Steps for Pursuing Purpose

October 19, 2008 By: admin Category: Inspirational Quote Comments Off

Each of us has a special purpose or mission, and I have been in search of mine since I was a child. From childhood until my early twenties, I suspected my mission was to go into the ministry. When the other boys were playing cowboys and Indians, I was dressed in long robes building altars, and as a young adult I would lie on my bed for hours praying to God for a sign. One never came.

For most of us, purpose is not something that is revealed through a burning bush. Instead, we stumble onto our lifes purpose. An impulse may lead us to a new place, and that new place leads us towards another, until eventually we find a spot that feels right. This spot is our purpose, and it often turns out to be a place we never considered or envisioned.

There are hundreds of books available on how to mine mission, and they tout a wide variety of methods including journaling, art, and creative visualization. But in my experience, its hard to extract purpose. Sometimes it doesnt pay to pursue purpose. It finds us and only when we are ready.

I now believe purpose unfolds as we unfold and that purpose is intricately tied to living an authentic life, for only when we live authentically can/does purpose reveal itself.

There is no formula for discovering purpose that works for everyone, but these six steps helped me. Perhaps they will help you too.

One: Discover authenticity through self-discovery. I am still searching for authentic self; its a lifelong process. Still, at no time in my life have I felt closer to my authentic self than I am now. For example, I am just now beginning to distinguish my wants and needs from parental expectations.

Two: Live an authentic life. Never before has my life so clearly reflected my true Self. I am not as afraid to show people who I am, and I do fewer things to gain others approval and more things that bring me pleasure.

Three: Listen. The root of the word vocation is vox (Latin for voice). To find our true vocation, we have to listen to our inner voice. I pay attention to day and nighttime dreams, intuition, energy level, emotions, and my body. Oprah once wrote in her magazine of the same name, If you pay attention to these cues — to the times youve felt most joyous, most fully engaged, most connected to yourself and others youll always be guided to the next best place.

Four: Act. Inventor, designer, and philosopher R. Buckminster Fuller is quoted in Lucia Capacchiones book Visioning: Ten Steps to Designing the Life of Your Dreams, as saying, What you actually do within twenty-four hours of having a creative idea will spell the difference between success and failure. To dream is not enough, we have to do something with the dream. For me, doing starts by putting the idea in writing. Every year, I write a business plan, and I revised it whenever I get a new idea. I add a new goal along with the action steps to implement it.

Five: Remain open. Not only do we have to do something with our dreams, we have to be open and not tied to a particular outcome. We have to surrender, and we have to trust. I have found that finding purpose is often a circuitous route; one path leads to another, and failures often lead to ultimate success.

Six: Be patient. Patience is not one of my virtues. I have to remember the story of Jake McCord, an outsider artist who lives in Thomson, Georgia. After finishing a painting, Jake places it in his front yard to season. When eager collectors try to buy one of these pieces from the yard, Jake says firmly, It aint ready yet. Jake knows not to rush it; when the time is right, it is right. The same is true for purpose; we have to be patient and remember, It aint ready yet.

Sometimes I feel I am living my mission, and at other times I feel I am not. Five years ago, I wrote a personal philosophy: To know yourself is to know God, and to share yourself is to serve Him/Her. Since then, I have strived to live my philosophy through writing, teaching, coaching, and speaking. Still, sometimes something seems to be missing, and I have to ask, Am I fulfilling my mission right now or still waiting for the burning bush?

I hope that in this moment I am fulfilling my mission to the best of my ability, and at the same time, I hope I am staying open to all the possibilities.

One Woman, One Leg, No Job

October 19, 2008 By: admin Category: Inspirational Quote Comments Off

What is social acceptance? Why is it so important? What can we do to overcome it? This inspirational story may change your attitude toward society and its evil un-acceptance and discriminations. Follow along as I give a detailed account of my experience with a life changing disability and the battle I continue to fight to gain acceptance and employment

I guess you can call me an average Jane. I grew up in a small rural town in Florida better known round here as Shady Hills. I went to a small Baptist school that I am pleased to say I loved. My parents, although now retired, were hard working and devoted to me and my siblings. I guess you could say that I had it all. What more could a kid want. I was a cheerleader for my small little school and I guess somewhat popular in my click of friends. I had a knack for being involved in every social, academic, and sport I could get involved with. Yep, that was me socially accepted and life was good. My active lifestyle and my popularity gave way to a very happy childs life.

As a fairy tale and happy life story would render, I must tell you that I married my high school sweetheart. We had 3 beautiful children. We struggled but, were very happy with our little lives in our little community.

They say that every good thing must come to end. Boy, was that an understatement. My life, starting with a separation with my husband, started to un- ravel in ways I could never imagine. At this point, I was in my mid- twenties and my now happy life a mess. My happy home was broken, my children were confused and I was left holding the bag so to speak.

Looking for a way to reclaim my life and to support my children on my own, I found work at a local collection agency. Yes, I was one of those, you know the people that call you all hours of the day and night to get your money that you just dont seem have. Quaint little job. I didnt get paid much but it paid the bills.

One weekend when I was picking my daughter up from her fathers house, my life seemed to undergo yet another set-back. I remember as I was driving down this curvy road at about dusk thinking to myself what happened to my life, will I ever be happy again? GOD, please show me the way to a better, happy life. All of a sudden, much to my chagrin, I hit a curve (not speeding mind you) and my car did a 380 degree turn into a ditch. I remember as I laid there thrown into the back seat (no my seat belt was not on) in shock, GOD, this is not my idea of a better, happier life could you please work with me here. As I lay there, I cant even imagine what had happened to me so all of a sudden. I couldnt move, I couldnt speak, I couldnt see if my little girl in the back seat was injured. What did I do to anyone to deserve this penance I thought to myself. The next thing I knew I was being removed from my car that, by the way, held up to this accident better than I did. And, off I went in a Life flight helicopter to the nearest trauma center in St. Petersburg, Florida. I remember when I was in the ER the immense pain I was having and begging someone to please knock me out. Knock me out and put a cast on this leg. I have to get to work tomorrow, I grumbled to the ER doctor and his staff. The ER doctor firmly replies to me young lady, I would be more concerned about saving that right leg of yours than going back to work! What? How could this be? My leg? My right leg? Ok, I thought to myself gather your sanity and find out whats going on here. Doctor I said with all do respect, what is wrong that I may lose my right leg? He replied in an educated and very matter of fact tone that I had indeed damaged a main artery in my right leg namely, the popliteal artery. You see my leg was neither broken nor fractured. I didnt even have a cut or bruise on me anywhere to speak of. My knee was dislocated severely and crushed the main artery cutting off the blood supply to the rest of my leg and foot. WOW, imagine that Im facing losing my leg. Here we go again. GOD, where are you? Help me! I cant lose my leg. I have three kids and a job. I have to get back to work. Ok, Doc, lets get this show on the road, I say without a worry on my mind.

Following that very thought I was on my way to a vascular surgery. Half knocked out and half awake I can see the bright lights of the Emergency Room and all the movements of the ER staff scuttling around me. NO! It was not St. Peter and the angels. It was real. It was happening. It was an OPERATION. Yes, before I knew it I was undergoing vascular surgery to repair my damaged artery. The next morning I was awaken by the sounds of beeping noises and people talking at a low whisper and most of all too unbearable pain. What did they do to me last night? My GOD above PLEASE this time hear my cry and take this pain from me! That smell I will never forget that smell. The smell of the hospital and I cant even describe it. The smell of blood, fear, pain, and death is my best analogy. Spooky, scarred for life I am. I had awakened enough for a nurse to tell me that I had been repaired and that as long as I kept a pulse in my foot that the vascular surgery was a success. My right leg was gutted like a fish. I was filleted on each side of my leg and the wound stuffed with gauze. The bandage changes were horrible. There is not enough morphine in Gods green earth to suffice the pain of those bandage changes especially at a rate of four times a day. Well, as a day turned into a week and weeks into months I wondered if I was ever going to get out of that ICU. When will I get out of here? I wanted so badly for this to just go away and GOD, Im sorry for complaining. I will gladly go back to my life being a single mother and working for the collection agency. and No more complaining- pinky swears! My never ending bargaining with my maker did not stop my suffering.

Two weeks after the vascular repair surgery I was told that the surgery had failed and that I would need to get my right leg amputated just about four inches below the knee. The only thing that I can recall about that wretched information was the thoughts of just get it over with. Needless to say I woke the next morning with this big white bandage wrapped around my leg. Whoa! Where did my leg go? Is this really happening? Someone wake me form this nightmare. I went through many more weeks of indescribable pain and agonizing bandage changes. But, most of all I went thru emotional torment. Will I ever walk again? How can I raise my children being maimed? Will any man ever want me again? I felt I was doomed for a lonely, depressing, unfulfilling life. I cried so much that I couldnt see straight. I wanted my old life back. I couldnt see past the ugliness of a woman with only one leg.

As the days went by, I had received all the bandage changes I could take and all the physical therapy one person could endure. It was time for m e to get off my pity party and start figuring out how to live life to the fullest. After all, many people with disabilities live full, happy and normal lives, so said the shrink. I fought my way out of that bed. I actually hopped to the sink on my one good leg to wash my hair, face and teeth that day. This was the day I was to be resurrected from my deathly depression and live again.

My determination was unstoppable and all I could think about was getting home to my family and my own bed. Hey, a little of moms home cooking would be great too. Oh yes, a job! I need a job! I was finally released and off and running I went. Well, off and hopping that is. I went home me, my wheelchair, crutches and walker. I learned to do everything as I did before but much more creatively this time around. I was stronger than I had ever been before. Its Funny how lifes circumstances change people.

After all the healing the therapy both physical and mental, I was now back in the social loop again. Although in my wheelchair, I was out in the public limelight as I once was. So I thought. It was during this time that I had my first feeling of being an outcast, a freak, different, even a minority. Let me explain.

My first experience came one day when I was shopping in our local food market in my little home town. I was rolling right along in my chariot (wheelchair) and I noticed that no one would look at me. Hello, down here I would think to myself as the people just passed me by. Am I invisible, am I contagious? What a feeling of loneliness and hurt came over me. People in my very own town had trouble accepting me with only one leg. Im still the same person, I lost a leg not a brain I would utter in my mind. My boyfriend Frank always made me hold my head up high no matter where we were. Make them look at you he used to say. I often wondered if it was because they were uncomfortable, maybe they didnt know what to say to me now. So, if they ignored me. No one would have to deal with it. But, I dealt with it. The feeling of being a social outcast beca
